With the ever-growing use of social networking, game developers are bridging the gap between themselves and the average gamer. This allows for more news straight from the source and often results in small tidbits of information in the lead-up to major announcements. In a recent example, Danny Bilson of THQ pulled a marketing move that has been gaining popularity in the gaming industry.
Bilson revealed over twitter the news of an upcoming unveiling:
“Look for a HUGE announcement from us the second week in March! Will come with lots of content.”
A revelation like this is sure to always grab attention and many will speculate as to what the announcement will be. While there are a few possible options, this news is almost certainly related to Saints Row 3.
At this point, there are three major games THQ plans on releasing in 2011 that Bilson may be referring to. The first title, Homefront, can be excluded because of the timing of the announcement. Homefront releases on March 15 and it wouldn’t make any sense to have such a big announcement regarding a game that has just come out. Red Faction: Armageddon is scheduled for release sometime in May and is certainly a candidate for big news.
However, considering Bilson’s emphasis on “HUGE”, this is probably not the case. A trailer has already been shown for Red Faction: Armageddon and the tweet seems to hint at totally new and exciting information from a game for which not much has been shown.
Unless THQ is announcing a new IP, this leaves Saints Row 3, the highly anticipated addition to the series. Not too long ago, Bilson confirmed that a Saints Row 3 announcement was on the way. It only makes sense that these announcements are one and the same.
Saints Row 3 will supposedly sport GTA IV quality graphics and may turn out to be one of the biggest releases in 2011. The first two Saints Row games were critically acclaimed and a welcome addition to a genre somewhat dominated by the Grand Theft Auto series, so it will be interesting to see if THQ can repeat the success they had with the original.
As if the Saints Row 3 tweet wasn’t enough of a carrot on a stick, Bilson also claims that there will be a big announcement for the next Relic Entertainment RTS sometime in August.
THQ has done a lot in improving their image in the gaming community. They have gone from a publisher known for children’s games and shovelware to a significant force that is not only partnered with Double Fine Productions and Guillermo del Toro, but creates fantastic series like Saints Row and Red Faction.
Hopefully, Bilson delivers on his claim of a huge announcement. Stay tuned to Game Rant for any updates, screenshots, or trailers that are revealed.
