The second trailer for Thor: Love and Thunder has finally arrived, and while there is plenty of excitement surrounding the return of Chris Hemsworth's God of Thunder and Natalie Portman as Mighty Thor, much of the talk surrounding the new footage is on Christian Bale's villainous role as Gorr the God Butcher.

Following the events of 2019's climactic Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder sees the return of Hemsworth's God of Thunder as he is in search of inner peace and his true identity this time around. But when a new enemy emerges, Thor is forced to recruit many allies in order to prevent the Galactic threat from eliminating all gods.

After starring as the iconic Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy, Bale is now playing the main antagonist, Gorr the God Butcher, a tormented being whose hatred towards gods has led him to face Thor. In the comics, Gorr comes from a nameless planet where lack of water, risk of starvation, earthquakes and other dangers are all very common. Yet, Gorr remains hopeful that the Gods will help his people. After losing his parents at a young age as well as his own family when he is older, Gorr is left to fend for himself, enduring much suffering as a result. While many fans at first were underwhelmed when merchandise revealed Gorr's new live-action design, one that is very different from the original design presented in the comics, the new trailer quickly won many of them back, as it appears Bale will deliver one terrifying performance. Many of those fans took to social media to share their reactions.

To keep the excitement level high, director Taika Waititi recently shared that he believes Bale as Gorr will be one of the best villains the MCU has ever seen. Aside from his comments, it is no surprise that Bale was able to cook up something truly special, as the Academy Award-winning actor is described as one of the best in the industry today. Bringing a talent like that into the MCU, one who also has experience working on comic book films alongside some of the best portrayals of comic book characters (Heath Ledger's Joker), there's no limit to what Bale can achieve with this character.

Approaching its big theatrical release, fans can expect to see more brief shots of Bale's Gorr in either another trailer or TV spots. Other than following Gorr on his mission of eliminating all gods in the universe, the film will also explore more of Valkyrie's (Tessa Thompson) rule as the new king and showcase Portman's Jane Foster (the astrophysicist and ex-lover of Thor who is making her first return since Thor: The Dark World) taking up the mantle of the God of Thunder. The Guardians of the Galaxy group will also play a smaller role.

Thor: Love and Thunder will arrive in theatres on July 8, 2022.
