It's hard not to dwell on the possibility of exciting cameos in the MCU, especially when the last two films featured some of the biggest ones the cinematic universe has ever seen. It appears that the tradition of surprising audiences with fun appearances will continue, as Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi has teased the upcoming film's exciting cameos.

Since Thor: Love and Thunder appears to stray away from the multiverse storyline (given what the trailers have presented so far), the possibility of huge cameos has definitely not been discussed as much as the two previous entries, Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, knowing of Thor: Ragnarok's inclusion of big names like Matt Damon and Sam Neill portraying Asgardian actors (Loki and Odin) in cameo roles, it was very likely all along that Waititi would find a way to surpass the bar set in his first MCU outing in terms of cameos.

Now it looks like Thor: Love and Thunder will indeed feature some exciting cameos, as the director, during an interview with Fandango All Access, has confirmed in a new interview. "Yes," Waititi responded after being asked if the upcoming film will meet fan expectations in terms of big surprises. In order to keep the cameos as surprises, Waititi added that he really does have to say as little as possible. "Otherwise it won't be a cameo. You can't talk about it. Then they may as well be on the poster," the director added.

While cameos are fun and sometimes can be crucial for the story, especially when they are a part of such a connective universe that involves setting up future projects, they can also be very detrimental. From balancing fans' expectations and telling a well-rounded story that doesn't feel too over-bloated, the inclusion of cameos can be a very difficult task. On top of that, preserving any secrecy for audiences has been another challenge for the MCU, as the growing amount of leaks and other spoilers surfacing on social media have shown no signs of slowing down.

But seeing how Waititi handled them in Ragnarok, as those cameos were handled in a very minor yet fun way, it seems that Thor: Love and Thunder will steer clear of any big expectations like the ones placed on the Doctor Strange sequel. Other than Damon and Neill returning, star Chris Hemsworth's brother, Luke, will also fill the role of an Asgardian actor portraying Thor. Russell Crowe, who has already been shown in the trailer, will play the role of Zeus. Melissa McCarthy will play the role of an Asgardian actress playing Thor's sister, Hela, while McCarthy's husband, Ben Falcone, has been cast in an undisclosed role.

Thor: Love and Thunder takes place after the events of 2019's climactic Avengers: Endgame and sees the return of Hemsworth as the God of Thunder, as he is in search of inner peace and his true identity this time around. But when a new enemy emerges by the name of Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), Thor is forced to recruit many allies in order to stop the Galactic threat from eliminating all gods. The film will also explore more of Valkyrie's (Tessa Thompson) rule as the new king and showcase Portman's Jane Foster taking up the mantle of the God of Thunder.

Thor: Love and Thunder will arrive in theatres on July 8, 2022.
