Remember that old Xbox Live Arcade game that came out in 2007 called Mad Tracks? No? Well I do. My son happen to buy it when I wasn’t looking. The title was a somewhat enjoyable game that put players in control of little wind-up cars that raced around various rooms in a house, not entirely disssimilar to Micro-Machines. It turns out that my son wasn’t the only kid in the world with an itchy trigger-finger, because Mad Tracks went on to shift over 1.8 million downloads, pretty much guaranteeing that its creators, Load Inc., would produce a follow-up.
Said follow-up has been a long time coming, but it is now here. The spiritual successor to Mad Tracks, curiously titled Things On Wheels, is due to hit Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, and can be yours for the princely sum of 800 Microsoft Points ($10). It looks to be more of the same miniature-car racing shenanigans that made Mad Tracks so popular, but without the bizarre power-recharge mechanic that dominated the playing style of its predecessor.
I must admit that I found Mad Tracks to be a fairly inoffensive title – neither good nor bad – but it lacked the core appeal that would have allowed me to overlook the bland graphics. Things On Wheels has addressed the visuals and jazzed up the overall appearance. Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think.
Things On Wheels releases on Xbox Live Arcade this Wednesday, May 12, 2010.
