Modern-day point-and-click adventure games are thought of in the vein of Telltale Games, but genre veterans Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick — responsible for 1987's Maniac Mansion and the Monkey Island series — are still active thanks to their 2017 game Thimbleweed Park. On Saturday Gilbert released a spin-off title called Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure that serves as a "prototype" of a new adventure game engine.

Starting from a Kickstarter that raised $626,250 in 2014, Thimbleweed Park is inspired by the developers' old LucasArts 2D adventure games. It follows five characters as they try to find out the story behind a dead body washed up in a river. The game's "dark, satirical and bizarre" world came to be popular, and the new spin-off follows one of its protagonists, Delores, when she gets a job as a newspaper photographer.

The spin-off can be played for free through Steam and the Epic Games Store, down from the original title's $20 price tag on mobile devices, PC, Switch, and Xbox One.

Steam hosts many point-and-click games. However, few are classic-styled adventure titles in the same vein as what Gilbert and Winnick bring to the table with games like Monkey Island and Thimbleweed Park.

Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure is available now on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
