Although movie and television producers can’t seem to drag a live-action adaptation of the Fables comic out of development hell (where it has been stuck since 2005), the fairy-tale-themed crime drama seems to be settling in quite nicely to the world of video games. The first episode of Telltale’s Fable’s adaptation, The Wolf Among Us, received pretty stellar reviews and players have been waiting (not so patiently) on the edge of their seats for the second installment.
The long break between Episode 1’s release (and jaw dropping cliffhanger) in October and the January announcement of Episode 2’s release left a lot of fans worrying this winter. Luckily, we are just about a week away from the release of Episode 2, titled Smoke and Mirrors, and Telltale is ready to start revealing more details about Episode 2 of 5.
A new (and surprisingly red band) trailer for Smoke and Mirrors gives fans an idea of the madness and violence that Bigby will unleash on Fabletown to get to the bottom of the case. It looks like players will continue solving crimes as Bigby Wolf in Episode 2, but they may potentially have a more difficult time containing his dark side. For players who are looking to play bad cop anyway, that shouldn’t be much of a deterrent.
After the extended break since Episode 1, the new trailer does a pretty good job refreshing our memories about the details of the first installment. There is also plenty of fan-service with cameos by other popular Fables characters like Jack, Beauty, Beast, and Bluebeard.
Unlike the recent trailer for BioShock Infinite’s upcoming DLC pack, the Smoke and Mirror’s trailer actually does a pretty good job avoiding spoilers for players who want to be taken by surprise. Considering the shock value of the last few moments of Episode 1, it is likely that players can expect many more twists, turns, and surprises in the upcoming episodes.
After the massive success of Telltale’s takes on Fables and The Walking Dead, we’re really looking forward to what the company brings to the table in the coming year or two. It will be interesting to see whether point-and-click adventure games are a passing fad once again or if they are here to stay this time around.
Do you think Telltale’s spin on Game of Thrones and Borderlands will be as successful as The Wolf Among Us or The Walking Dead? Sound off in the comments.
The Wolf Among Us: Episode Two , titled “Smoke & Mirrors” will be released in early February. Episode One, “Faith,” is available now for PC, Mac, Xbox 360, PS3 and iOS devices at a cost of $4.99, with the full season order costing just $19.99.
