Telltale Games miraculously came back from the dead at the tail end of 2019, revealing a trailer at the 2019 Game Awards for The Wolf Among Us 2. Now that the game has been (re-)announced, the discussion turns to when players will be getting their hands on it.

When Telltale Games shuttered its doors in 2018, it lost its license to the Walking Dead and Netflix took back the rights to Stranger Things. One property was the biggest hit for the company, the other a series everyone was talking about and one that seemed a perfect match for the Telltale format, respectively. Despite losing those, Telltale held on to The Wolf Among Us, and is poised to deliver the long-awaited sequel... eventually.

A leak from a Reddit user, who previously shared information on Telltale, is reporting that the game will land somewhere in 2021. In addition to giving fans this generous release window, the tipster also talks about where the game is in production. Known assets that will be used in the game, such as Bigby's place, the Woodlands, a business office, and some New York streets have been completed, but now the team is waiting for partner studio AdHoc to send new storyboards their way so they can continue working. With the news coming from an anonymous source, fans should take information like this with a grain of salt. The 2021 timeline does square with reports that Telltale is doing everything it can to prevent crunch during development, something that dogged the company in its past life.

Slowing down the frantic pace of development that undid the company previously is a step in the right direction. Telltale stretched its resources too thin, which not only affected the quality of its product, but was also detrimental to morale. Crunch is brutal, so any steps taken to limit that are a positive, even if it means games take longer to reach store shelves.

The Wolf Among Us earned itself a cult following and was the best received non-Walking Dead title in the Telltale lineup. A prequel to Bill Willingham's Fables comic series, The Wolf Among Us follows classic fairy tale characters who have fled their fairy tale worlds and are seeking refuge in New York City, in an enclave known as Fabletown. There is a lot of lore that the development team can draw from, and with former Telltale employees manning the ship at AdHoc, there is hope that the game can deliver the same noir-ish charm the first season offered.

The Wolf Among Us 2 is currently in development from Telltale Games with a rumored 2021 release.
