Back in 2013, the first season of The Wolf Among Us released. An adaptation of the popular comic book series Fables, the mature game wowed fans of the source material and newcomers alike. Brought to life with a great cast, stylish visuals, and Telltale’s signature style of a choice-based narrative, everything about The Wolf Among Us worked well.

As such, it is hardly a surprise that fans wanted to see the adventures of Bigby Wolf continue in a sequel, and after years of waiting, they eventually got their wish. A 2017 reveal set the game up for a 2018 launch, though sadly, Telltale Games’ devastating closure made this seem unlikely. 2019 rekindled hope, however, comparing that the new version of Telltale was indeed working on The Wolf Among Us 2. Since then, though, things have been remarkably quiet.

The Original Reveal(s)

The initial reveal for The Wolf Among Us 2 took place in 2017, with Telltale releasing a video hyping up the game. Showing several Tweets from hopeful fans asking for a follow-up to the original, the trailer sees voice actors and developers reading off the requests. Eventually, Bigby’s voice actor tells fans that a sequel is coming, with everyone in the video doubling down on a 2018 launch for the game. While this obviously did not come to be, it is clear years ago that fans wanted more Wolf Among Us content.

The late 2019 re-reveal of The Wolf Among Us 2 provided a bit more context for what the sequel will be about. Snow White asks Bigby to assist her with a new matter, though it is unclear what the mayor of Fabletown is currently struggling with. She does, however, confirm that Bigby has changed his ways, retiring his claws and fangs and becoming less cruel than he once was. Despite this, Snow asks the Big Bad Wolf to go back to how he was, confirming that whatever matter she is dealing with is a serious one. While this trailer was promising, it came over a year ago, and gamers have had few updates since then.

Possible Struggles And Staying Optimistic

While it may be easy to worry about the game and its future, there are a few important things to keep in mind regarding The Wolf Among Us 2’s development. First, this is the first game from “Telltale 2.0,” and the studio is likely going through some growing pains as a result. A mixture of new and old talent from the original Telltale, there is surely some easing in that needs to be done. Secondly, and even more importantly, Telltale has been working on The Wolf Among Us 2 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has had a major impact on video game development, with major delays for games like Gotham Knights and Harry Potter: Hogwarts Legacy. On top of that, major releases like Overwatch 2 are moving at a much slower pace due to the restrictions put in place because of the disease. The same issues could easily be impacting Telltale as it works on the highly anticipated sequel, slowing down the development of the next Fabletown story. As such, the game having no promised release date may have been a blessing in disguise, as Telltale should feel no pressure to get The Wolf Among Us 2 out by a certain date. The studio can take all the time it needs to ensure that the project lives up to they hype, something that would easily make the wait worth it.

Lastly, and most importantly, The Wolf Among Us 2’s December 2020 update clarified that all the episodes of the sequel are being developed at the same time. While it remains to be seen if the entire game will release at the same time like Life is Strange: True Colors, or just at a consistent episodic pace, this will understandably slow down development. With all episodes being made at once, it makes sense that Telltale has not been ready to show off more of the game. In turn, though things may seem quiet, fans of the franchise do not need to worry about The Wolf Among Us 2.

The Wolf Among Us 2 is currently in development.
