The Witcher has become a titan of the games industry ever since The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released all the way back in 2015. Now, CD Projekt Red has released some staggering statistics of The Witcher's popularity.

Not much has been said of the future of The Witcher other than the upcoming location-based mobile game The Witcher: Monster Slayer, as well as the ongoing digital card game spin-off Gwent: The Witcher Card Game. However, CD Projekt Red has said previously that they will return to The Witcher, but that the game will likely not follow Geralt of Rivia, as the first three entries in the series form a completed trilogy.

The new numbers come from the CD Projekt Red investor relations Twitter page where an image was uploaded announcing that the series has sold a total of 50 million copies. The numbers put the series in league with other giant franchises like Tekken and just under the Monster Hunter series, which recently passed over 60 million copies sold. What is particularly interesting about the infographic is that over 30 million copies were of just The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Doubtlessly, the game's very warm critical reception played a large role in its success, but the popular Netflix show based on the book series also likely contributed.

The numbers also highlight how impressively CD Projekt Red's follow-up title, Cyberpunk 2077, performed as it sold nearly half of The Witcher 3's numbers in just one month, even when accounting for the 30,000 copies that were returned shortly after release. The numbers indicate just how strong of a position CD Projekt Red and The Witcher are in, and since the company has stated before that The Witcher will play a big role in building the company's future, fans hopefully will not have much longer to wait for more news on future entries.

With the recent news that starting next year CD Projekt Red will begin developing two new AAA games simultaneously, as well as the company's announced interest in bringing multiplayer to all of its franchises, there is a lot of future potential for The Witcher. While fans will have the series' new mobile game to occupy themselves with until a new mainline title is revealed, hopefully, they will not have to wait too long to return to the world of The Witcher. Of course, many fans are still playing The Wither 3: Wild Hunt as well, and the game frequently receives new mods from the community to refresh the experience for any friends who just can't get enough of Geralt's dry charm.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
