Horses are actually pretty common in video games. This is because they are an animal that is deeply tied to human culture. They were used to get around for a long time! With a ton of games taking place in history or in fantasy settings, players often get horses to ride from place to place.

Not every horse is built the same though. Some are quite forgettable and nameless. Others, however, are memorable. There are horses that the characters have bonds with. Horse designs also get pretty crazy in video games. Some come out normal while others are undead, magical, or even part-man.

Here are ten of the best horses from video games.

10 Roach From The Witcher Series

Not all players know this, but Roach is actually named after a kind of fish. It is not based on a cockroach or the character Vernon Roche. Interestingly enough, Roach is also female in the books and first couple games but male in The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt. This is actually because it's not the same horse! Geralt just names all his horses the same name.

Despite being more than one horse, a lot of players have gotten attached to Roach. The most popular one would be from the third game since that is the best and most recent one of the franchise.

9 Epona From The Legend Of Zelda Series

Epona has been in many Legend of Zelda games as Link's horse. She is first introduced in Ocarina of Time and then appeared in Majora's Mask, Oracle of Ages, Oracle of Seasons, Four Swords Adventures, The Minish Cap, Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild, Link's Crossbow Training, Hyrule Warriors, and Hyrule Warriors Legends. That is a lot of games for one horse!

In the most recent game, fans were a little disappointed. Breath of the Wild had many steeds you could ride but Epona was only available if you had a certain amiibo and scanned it into the game. It is worth it though because Epona is a horse with perfect stats.

8 Agro From Shadow Of The Colossus

You wouldn't expect any sane animal to chase a colossus, but this horse manages to do it!

Shadow of the Colossus is a game that is considered to be art. It shows rather than tells. There are few characters and they all have little to say. You go around killing giant colossi and its epic. Your only real friend is your horse, Agro. Some battles even require Agro, because you need that speed in order to catch up or run away from a colossus.

7 Shadowmere From The Elder Scrolls Series

Shadowmere first appeared in Oblivion and was the steed of Lucien Lachance of the Dark Brotherhood. In Oblivion and Skyrim, this horse is available to the player. In a world full of horses, Shadowmere is special. First of all, she actually has a name. Her design is unique as well, as her red eyes glow and her fur is black as night. She also has a ton of health compared to other horses.

How you meet Shadowmere in Skyrim is pretty cool, as the horse spawns out of a dark pool like a magical being of darkness.

6 Rapidash From The Pokémon Series

Pokémon has a number of horses, but Rapidash is a classic. The fire version has been around since the first generation and now it has a region variant, which is the cool trend lately. Fans love Rapidash, and would welcome even more region variants!

Rapidash is a pretty special horse on this list because it is not commonly rode by the player. There are some games where you can though, like Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee.

5 Death From Red Dead Redemption

Death is actually from the Undead Nightmare DLC for Red Dead Redemption. Death is definitely not your average horse, as it is one of the four horses of the apocalypse, along with Famine, War, and Pestilence.

Death is great because it's basically invincible. It will instantly kill anything undead that collides with by making their heads explode. Also, a ghostly trail of wind is always following behind the horse. The game definitely as many horses, but Death is quite unique as well as useful.

4 Ruin From Darksiders

Speaking of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, another great horse is from Darksiders, where you play as War. His steed is Ruin, who he has to free from its captor at a certain point in the game.

Ruin is very intimidating and cool. It bursts out of the ground when summoned, can assist with combos, boost attacks, phase through objects, and more. This horse was so great that a lot of fans complained about how long it took to get it in the game.

3 Butt Stallion From Borderlands 2

Not all horses need to be like Ruin or Death. Butt Stallion is just as important to the gaming community in her own way. She is Handsome Jack's pony. She is all fun and laughter, as she does something random every time she is fed from vomiting items to excreting them. She is only the only way you can get the weapon, Unicornsplosion.

This is an absurd animal, and we love it for that.

2 D-Horse From Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Horse nerds would recognize D-Horse as a white Andalusian. D-Horse is one of your early-on companions, and one we are quite thankful for, in Metal Gear Solid V. He is available to you immediately after the prologue. You can customize the horses' armor, which is always fun. A goofy part of D-Horse is that it can defecate at your position, which is an actual tactic you can use to cause light vehicles to slip!

1 Yuuma From My Horse Prince

While My Horse Prince isn't popular, as its just an app game, a lot of people have given it a look. Its concept is absolutely nuts. The protagonist is a girl who was born on the year of the horse and apparently because of that she sees this particular horse as a man. She agrees to buy him and slowly bond with him. Yuuma is his name and he is a handsome abomination.

The cutscenes are comedy gold and there are a lot of horse puns.
