All fans of The Witcher will be more than happy that CD Projekt RED has finally announced that a new game in the saga is in development. However, as seen with the announcement artwork stating "New Saga Begins," it's emphasizing the fact that the new game is not part of the main saga.

The new game in The Witcher franchise will use Unreal Engine 5, and CD Projekt RED will work closely with its developers to craft the next open-world Witcher game in the new engine. However, no further information regarding the plot, characters, or release date is currently available.

In the last few hours, fans have indulged in thinking about possible paths that the development team could take to create a new The Witcher. Both the announcement itself, and the medallion that is visibly different from that of Geralt and the School of the Wolf, have been the source of speculation.

One of the developers on The Witcher clarified some key points about what was not announced, namely: A game called The Witcher 4 and a game that is exclusive to a single store. However, as Global PR Director Radek Grabowski himself wanted to specify, this is a confirmation of a new saga in The Witcher franchise, not a discussion about the plot, game mechanics, and characters.

With this information, some of the fan theories around Geralt's return appear to be unlikely. Instead, others would like to start a new saga with Ciri as the protagonist, referring to the medallion of the artwork that many have defined as the one of the School of the Cat.

In reality, the medallion looks more like that of the School of the Lynx, a school founded after the extinction of the School of the Wolf by Eskel, Lambert, and Keira Metz. The theory that sees one of these characters as the protagonist seems to be the most eligible one, with a new The Witcher that could tell a story about one of these three characters and a narrative arc dedicated to them.

Some fans of the saga may turn up their noses in case the School of the Lynx theory proves correct, as the School of the Lynx is not canon and is not present in The Witcher 3 lore. It is a school that some fans of the game that theorized it could exist after the disappearance of the School of the Wolf.

Since Geralt acting as the protagonist of this new saga is quite unlikely, developers are more likely to refer to one of the secondary characters seen in other games or create a new Witcher to star. The roads that CD Projekt RED can take are many, as it could make a standard character like Geralt, or one that can be customized by each individual player, as in the case of Cyberpunk 2077.

Furthermore, given that players are not aware of any type of information other than that the game is in development, it is also difficult to hypothesize on a possible setting. For example, if the developers have really thought about the School of the Lynx and one of its founders as the protagonist, the game could be set during the events of the previous games, which, however, would be experienced from another perspective. Or, again, CD Projekt RED could tell a completely different story set after the events of The Witcher 3.
