Even despite the whole Cyberpunk 2077 debacle, CD Projekt Red is still generally considered to be one of the best RPG developers out there, and a massive reason for that is its work on the Witcher series. Beginning work on the fantasy franchise in 2007, it took a few years for CD Projekt Red's Witcher series to really hit the mainstream, with the release of The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt in 2015 being the studio's first huge hit. And now, after a brief hiatus, CD Projekt Red looks to continue its Witcher saga, though it might not feature all of the characters fans would expect.

While CD Projekt Red's remake of the first Witcher game is slated for release next, the developer also has three new Witcher projects in the works. Currently codenamed Project Sirius, Project Polaris, and Project Canis Majoris, these Witcher titles will form a brand new Witcher saga for the developer, and though little is known about them, it seems unlikely that CD Projekt Red would carry over the same beloved characters as its original Witcher trilogy - though Ciri could be the exception to that.

Ciri Might Be the Only Returning Character in the New Witcher Saga

Ciri Gwent Witcher 3

In October of last year, CD Projekt Red gave brief breakdowns of all of its upcoming Witcher projects. Project Sirius is a Witcher title being developed by The Molasses Flood which is apparently targeting a "broader audience," and will contain some kind of multiplayer component. Project Canis Majoris has an even vaguer description, with CD Projekt Red simply stating that this will be another "fully-fledged Witcher production." But the truly exciting project is Polaris, a brand-new trilogy designed to "open the new Witcher saga" and expand on the storytelling on The Witcher 3.

While it hasn't been officially confirmed, reading between the lines it seems as though the Project Polaris trilogy will follow on from the events of The Witcher 3 in some way, but with CD Projekt Red stating that this series will begin a new saga, it seems pretty unlikely that this new trilogy follows on directly. Instead, it's much more likely that Project Polaris takes place a good few decades after the events of Witcher 3, giving time for the world to heal from the Wild Hunt's antics, just before a new threat arises.

If Project Polaris and the new Witcher saga do take place a fair while in the future, then it's also pretty unlikely that fans will get to control Geralt of Rivia once more. While Witchers age at an incredibly slow rate, with Geralt technically being between 90 and 100 by the time of The Witcher 3, they aren't immortal, and if the new saga ends up being set quite far in the future then Geralt might have died, along with the rest of The Witcher's iconic cast, most of which also age very slowly. And if this is the case, then the most likely candidate for a new playable protagonist is Ciri.

With Elder Blood running through her veins, Ciri has access to a plethora of god-like abilities, with one of her most powerful being the ability to travel through space and time, and even different dimensions. Fans get to see this power in action throughout The Witcher 3, with Ciri popping in and out of other dimensions and time periods to gather artifacts and escape from enemies. If the new Witcher saga ends up being set in the future, or even in the unlikely event that it's set far in the past, Ciri is likely the only character from the original trilogy that could appear, with her dimension-hopping abilities letting her show up just about anywhere.

New Witcher games are in development.
