Despite the digital age that is in full swing, there is seemingly still a lot of room in the modern world for tabletop gaming. Much-loved franchises, such as CD Projekt Red's The Witcher and Cyberpunk, have much more to offer the community than just what is available on-screen. Take the former, for example. In February of this year, it was announced that publisher GO ON BOARD had started an online campaign to fund a board game in The Witcher universe, subtitled Old World. Now a recent development shows that this Witcher board game funding campaign is already well above its intended target.

With just two weeks to go until the campaign is finished, an update on the publisher's Kickstarter page revealed that funding for The Witcher tabletop game has surpassed $3 million, out of its $300,000 goal. At the time of writing, the figure is increasing at a steady pace so is likely to be much higher by the time many people read this article.

As a franchise, The Witcher is considered to have one of the densest lores out of any modern RPG. The Witcher 3, which came out in 2015 to extremely high praise, is arguably the strongest game out of the series, with rich characters in a detailed world. With that, it's hardly surprising that fans and those in the industry would be interested in seeing the games explored in other ways. The Kickstarter campaign reaching $3 million with time to spare is a testament to how loved the franchise is, but also how popular board games have become in recent years.

GO ON BOARD describes Old World as an action adventure board game, in which players, up to five, will get to make numerous choices and do battle in an expansive world. The game is also set several years before Geralt's story. With news recently that the new-gen ports of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may utilize fan mods to improve and grow the content, it arguably cannot be overstated just how immersive and immense the in-game universe is. With the board game already massively funded, it will provide a non-digital way for players to experience additional aspects of the lore.

This is also not the first board game that has smashed its Kickstarter goal. Back in October 2020, the tabletop RPG Darkest Dungeon, an adaptation of the game developed by Red Hook Studios and released in 2016, reached its $300,000 goal in less than an hour. If there's one lesson to be learned from this, it's that video games and board games go hand-in-hand.

Currently, there is no scheduled release date for The Witcher: Old World.
