The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt provides Geralt of Rivia with several opportunities for romance. Whether it be a one-night stand with a succubus or rekindling a dormant flame with a past lover, Geralt has quite the list of companions to choose from. While some of these encounters have very little effect on the overall narrative, others will play a major role in determining where Geralt ends up when his journey comes to an end.
The game's larger romantic endeavors, like most everything in The Witcher 3, are well-crafted stories that are fully integrated into the main plot. Though it is possible to complete the game without fully committing to one woman, it clearly aims to make Geralt choose.
How To Romance Triss: Overview
One of the most important opportunities for romance comes in the form of Triss Merigold, a friend and former lover of Geralt's, who accompanies him on several important missions throughout the game. Like many of the possible romances in The Witcher 3, successfully courting Triss will require the player to pay close attention to dialog options, as there are no further opportunities if the wrong options are selected.
Triss is one of two characters in the base game whose relationship with Geralt is tied to the main narrative, the other being Yennefer of Vengerberg. This love triangle is at the center of the entire game. Due to this, there are several steps that are not required for romance with Triss but still represent important moments in the overall relationship.
The only required steps to follow in order to successfully romance Triss:
- Work through all Triss-related side-quests. These include "A Matter of Life and Death" and "Now or Never."
- Help Triss during "Now or Never" and ask her to stay.
- Complete "Carnal Knowledge Encounter."
- Do not try to romance both Triss and Yen.
Romancing Triss: Side Quests
A Matter of Life and Death
In order to successfully romance Triss, Geralt must first lay the foundation during her side quests. The first real opportunity for this comes near the end of "A Matter of Life and Death," as Triss asks Geralt to sit with her. After a brief talk, Triss will suddenly get up and run into a garden maze, calling for Geralt to follow her. This will lead to an opportunity for Geralt to kiss Triss under the fireworks. Completing this task will be the first step towards romance.
Now or Never
The next step will require Geralt to help Triss get her fellow mages out of Novigrad safely. Upon completion of this task, Triss will begin to board the boat that takes the group out of the city. However, before she leaves, Geralt will have the opportunity to ask her to stay. To get the best possible outcome, follow these steps:
- When talking to Triss, choose "Stay with me" and "I love you."
- Listen to Djikstra's love story.
Though at first, it appeared that Triss had left, it turns out that she had been waiting on the docks the entire time. This will lead to the love scene between Geralt and Triss.
Important! - Both "A Matter of Life and Death" and "Now or Never" must be completed prior to the "Isle of Mists" quest. Failing to do so will cause whichever of the two is available to be automatically failed, cutting off the romance option.
Don't Mess With Triss
Though the love scene serves as the conclusion of Geralt's pursuit of Triss, it does not mean that she is out of the picture. Aside from the endgame state that features Triss, there is another important factor to consider when advancing the story: Yennefer of Vengerberg. Triss has made some questionable choices in the past, including forgetting to tell Geralt he was madly in love with Yennefer when he lost his memory. Geralt will still have the option to follow the path toward romancing Yennefer, though those who wish to see Geralt's story end with some semblance of happiness should avoid this. At best, attempting to romance both Triss and Yennefer will see Geralt end the game completely alone.
