It's hard to overstate how big the online response has been to the announcement that Berserk manga creator Kentaro Miura died earlier this month. The series has been in development for over 30 years, and Berserk had a lot of influence on video games and other dark fantasy media, leading to many tributes cropping up all across the Internet. One recent tribute sees Berserk's protagonist Guts added into CD Projekt Red's popular open-world fantasy title The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Miura's death was officially reported by the Berserk Twitter account on May 19 at 8:00 p.m. PT, and vigils began in games like Final Fantasy 14 almost immediately. The manga has received multiple anime adaptations over the years, though its story was not completed prior to the loss of its creator. Even so, its long-running narrative had a big impact on many fans.

As publicized by Dark Side of Gaming (DSO Gaming), a Polish Nexus Mods user named hub997 uploaded a Berserk Guts Skin mod on May 26, dedicating it "in memory of Kentaro Miura." Guts has been modded into The Witcher 3 before, but this new version is specifically an aesthetic change with no additional benefits. It replaces the Level 1 Gryphon Armor, letting Geralt of Rivia become Guts if he wears only the Gryphon Pants and equips a specific sword.

The Witcher 3 has long been a hub for modders with any and all goals. Some mods have improved graphics in The Witcher 3, building upon the 2015 title, while others have added new mechanics like extra weapon types or even full campaigns and characters. One notable mod released last year replaced all of Geralt's romance options with fan-favorite character Yennefer; hot off the heels of a Netflix adaptation starring Henry Cavill.

This acclaimed CD Projekt Red game is not the only place Berserk has appeared. Its fandom has also kicked up projects in real life, with a custom Game Boy featuring Berserk artwork being commissioned this March. However, there's no doubt that tributes such as this mod uploaded by hub997 will continue to crop up following the death of Miura.

Mods for The Witcher 3 should also continue rolling out despite the ongoing negative reception to CD Projekt Red's follow-up title Cyberpunk 2077. Other games like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and the recent Resident Evil Village are also popular for their modding support, as the practice offers many players an opportunity to live out their wildest fantasies - in this case, taking Guts all over the world of The Witcher.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
