If you thought The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings might be a little too easy for your hardcore self, you might want to think again. CD Projekt Red, the development team behind The Witcher series, has just announced a brand new Insane difficulty mode for those who have an obsession with masochism. Not only will Insane likely be difficult beyond measure, but if you die, your game ends. Permanently. There is still an option to save the game, but those files will become obsolete if you should die on your journey.
Mateusz Kanik had the following to say about the new difficulty level when speaking to Eurogamer:
“It won’t be easy to not fight the monsters. We fixed that by giving all opponents special abilities which allow them to catch the Witcher. Undead can dig into the ground and get up near the player. So when you run he will dig up in front of you and grab you. It will be harder to just run and avoid the fight.”
Further cementing the notion that their Insane difficulty will be trouble for gamers willing to take the challenge, CD Projekt Red has made it clear they were heavily inspired by a title that led to many broken controllers and crying gamers last year, Demon’s Souls. You may want to run through the title once before attempting Insane mode. The Witcher 2 still has quite a long road ahead of it until release, so it’s nice to see the team letting loose big surprises like this as we near the release date. A few weeks ago we even saw some extended gameplay sequences to whet our appetite for the upcoming non-linear RPG. With this and the new Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim both coming out next year, it’ll be a great year for enormous RPGs.
