Rockstar Toronto's 2005 game The Warriors, based on the 1979 film of the same name, is a cult classic among fans of the PlayStation 2 and original Xbox. Now, 15 years after the game’s release, those same fans are campaigning for The Warriors to receive the remake treatment for next-gen consoles.

Some of the video game movie tie-ins that released in the 2000s were more akin to shoddily put-together marketing material than quality gaming experiences, but The Warriors is one of the few exceptions. The Warrior’s beat ‘em up gameplay and cinematic references invoke the classic Rockstar feel, and is complete with large-scale brawls between the stylish rival gangs of 1970s New York and chase sequences that call back to the original movie. The title was critically acclaimed upon release, with a Metacritic score of 84 out of 100, and was praised by fans for its highly stylized world. Game Informer called it “the best game adaptation of a film ever in terms of capturing the mood of the original movie.”

The Warriors was so adored that, even 15 years later, fans are calling on Rockstar to remake the game for next-gen consoles. There are several petitions that have been circulating online for the game to get the remaster treatment, though fans have varying opinions on how Rockstar should revamp the title. On Reddit, some users have suggested that the game should simply be updated with next-gen graphics, while others have expressed desire to see The Warriors entirely remade into an open world experience similar to Grand Theft Auto.

But remaking the game from the ground up would come with its own challenges. One of the aspects that fans and critics appreciated most about the 2005 game was its voice work from actors of the original movie, including Michael Beck as protagonist Swan, James Remar as Ajax, Deborah Van Valkenburgh as Mercy, and Dorsey Wright as Cleon. Gathering the old cast and coaching them to sound like they are still in their 20s could pose a challenge to Rockstar, and fans would likely be displeased with a remake that lacked the voices of the original cast.

So far, the petitions have not materialized any indication that Rockstar will in fact remake the game, but at the very least it shows that there is strong support for The Warriors to be remade. Rockstar currently has its hands full with GTA Online, Red Dead Online, and, if the rumors are to believed, GTA 6, so it seems like a long shot for the studio to release a Warriors remake. Still, if fans continue to show their support for the title, it is not that difficult to see Rockstar possibly updating the game with next-gen graphics. After all, the developer already released a PS4 port for the game in 2016.

The Warriors released in 2005 for PS2 and the original Xbox. A version for the PSP was released two years later, and a PS4 port was made available in 2016.
