Like most mobile games, The Walking Dead: Survivors is a social game. Players interact by trading resources and sending aid to other players' bases. But it's impossible for every player to interact with every other player, especially when The Walking Dead: Survivors already has over 1.5 million players. Instead, players are only able to interact with others on the same server, referred to in-game as a region.

For most players, this won't be a problem. Each of The Walking Dead: Survivor's servers are well-populated, so they're bound to find someone. But there are times where a player might want to join a specific server. Maybe they want to play with an old friend, or they want to join a specific Walking Dead: Survivors clan.

Thankfully, the game does allow players to switch regions, but it can't be done freely. There are restrictions in place, and players need to be careful before committing to a switch.

Restrictions to Switching Regions

Only new players are allowed to switch regions. Once a player passes level 6, or spends 7 days playing, they're locked in place. If they want to change regions after that, they have to make a new account. This is presumably to keep experienced players from wrecking a server's balance.

A player cannot change regions if they are in the middle of a battle or are in a clan. All fighters need to be idle.

Lastly, a player needs to spend a resource, the Cross-Region Relocation Token, if they want to switch. Every account starts with only one, so they functionally only have one chance to change servers. If a player wants to play with a specific friend, then they need to know their exact region ahead of time. (Perhaps they can co-ordinate over The Walking Dead: Life.)

How to Change Regions

First, players need to zoom out to the over-world map by pinching the screen. When they've zoomed out far enough, a globe icon will appear in the bottom right corner.

Clicking the globe will reveal a list of open servers, each one designated by a number. If a player wants to find a specific server, they can use the search bar, but not every possible number will appear. Some servers are full or otherwise unavailable.

Once they click a region, they're taken to a screen that lists the restrictions and are asked if they're sure they want to relocate. When they agree, their settlement is instantly transported to a new area.

It's understandable why they would want to limit server migration, especially with Survivors' planned PVP elements, but the current restrictions feel a bit excessive. Hopefully, a future update dials them back.

The Walking Dead: Survivors is now available for Android and iOS.
