There are a number of video games based off Robert Kirkman's comic book series The Walking Dead, which was largely popularized by a long-running television adaptation on AMC. Mobile game The Walking Dead: Survivors released April 12, for example, and a new update for Skydance Interactive's VR game The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners was announced during the Oculus Gaming Showcase.

The immersive nature of VR lends itself to horror games, and today's Oculus Gaming Showcase featured a number of them. More details about fan-favorite Resident Evil 4 coming to VR on the Oculus Quest 2 headset were provided following the Resident Evil Showcase last week, and a new trailer debuted for Wraith: The Oblivion - Afterlife; a VR game set in the World of Darkness franchise. A reveal trailer for The Walking Dead: Saint and Sinners' new Aftershocks update capped off the event.

Aftershocks is a free update that will release May 20, offering "hours of new content" with more collectibles to find and survival tools to use. The follow-up story takes place in New Orleans, where players have to contend with both undead hordes and a group of malevolent, cultish survivors called The Reclaimed attempting to steal a stockpile of supplies. Though the trailer featured in today's livestream only focuses on Oculus Quest and Rift platforms, another version released via Twitter confirms the update will release concurrently for The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners on PlayStation VR, Steam VR, and Viveport.

Skydance Interactive's VR game debuted in January 2020 and received a number of accolades including a nomination for Best VR/AR Game at The Game Awards last December. One reason for the game's success has been its ongoing support, with The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners receiving a "Meatgrinder Update" in July 2020.

As The Walking Dead on AMC prepares to air its final season starting August 22, its influence continues to show. Last year The Walking Dead characters appeared in Epic Games' Fortnite as well as Blue Mammoth Games' Brawlhalla. The franchise will also feature prominently in a series of anthology comics called Skybound X meant to celebrate publisher Skybound Entertainment's tenth anniversary.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners was one of the best VR games and best horror games of 2020, so fans should be pleased to get their hands on more content this May. In the meantime there are plenty more games featuring Kirkman's brand of zombies to consume, including the popular Telltale Games series.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is available now on PC and PS4. The Aftershocks update releases May 20.
