2019's The Sinking City surprise launched on next-generation consoles yesterday. The new version of Frogwares' Lovecraftian mystery game brings with it a bevy of next-generation features and upgrades to The Sinking City.

The Sinking City has been the center of a legal battle between Frogwares and publisher Nacom after Frogwares alleged that Nacom pirated a copy of The Sinking City and was selling it on Steam illegally. The legal battle has led to the game being removed from Steam with no sign of its return, although the title has remained available on its various other platforms as well as other PC retailers like EA Origin.

Now, after The Sinking City was ported to PlayStation 5 back in February, Frogwares has released a surprise trailer announcing that The Sinking City is coming to Xbox Series X/S. The video is filled with comparisons between the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S versions of the game. The next-generation version unsurprisingly has much-improved lighting and textures across the board. The clips of the upgraded version have much-improved lighting that is brighter while and more detailed with more dynamic effects and depth of field.

The trailer also shows off that the next-generation version has vastly improved load times. The example shown in the video shows a player fast traveling to a new location of the map with the load time only taking around two or three seconds. A blog post by Frogwares also gives details on why Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of The Sinking City are not able to be upgraded to the next-generation version of the game for free. The post explains that it is a consequence of the current legal battle that has caused Frogwares to publish it on the new consoles itself while the older versions are not. The next-generation upgrade may also give players a sneak peek at what sort of technical features they may be able to expect from Frogwares' upcoming Sherlock Holmes Chapter One.

When The Sinking City first launched it received mixed reviews, although some complaints that reviewers had with the title were in regards to its technical issues, so the upgraded versions may very well fix that for players. For fans of The Sinking City or any players that have been interested in it but have yet to pull the trigger and give it a try, the upgraded version includes all of the DLCs and makes for a great place to run through the title again or jump in for the first time.

The Sinking City is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
