Over the years the video game adaptation film genre has had a markedly negative stigma attached to it. After failures like Super Mario Bros. and, more recently Prince of Persia, gamers have become wary of every adaptation they hear about.

That’s why it was very shocking to hear that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, star of the equally awful Doom adaptation, would like to give the genre another try. Not only did Johnson say he wanted to do another adaptation, but also he cites one particularly popular title as topping his list. While Doom certainly had its moments, perhaps Johnson felt that the over-the-top nature inherent to that storyline was what didn’t click with the film going public. To pull a complete 180 from that somewhat silly first person shooter title, Johnson told MTV that he would like to make a film based on the most recent Call of Duty title, Black Ops.

Of course Black Ops, the most profitable title from 2010, is still within the first person shooter genre, but it features a much more realistic plot and is a grittier experience overall.

The Rock has shown himself to be an actor who isn’t above any type of work, and one who loves to get involved in projects he feels there is an audience for. It’s hard to tell whether he is a fan of Treyarch’s shooter or if he just knew the perfect buzz word to prick up gamers’ ears, but we suspect it’s tough to squeeze some Zombie sessions in between films and appearing on Wrestlemania.

Though we don’t expect this Black Ops movie will happen any time soon, or at all for that matter, there is the potential for gamers to return to that particular milieu with a rumored sequel in the cards. Our only request for that sequel and this Black Ops movie is that they each try to evolve their respective genres.

Would you be interested in watching a Call of Duty: Black Ops movie? Do you think that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson would be a good fit to star?
