Supermassive Games' The Quarry is a spiritual successor to one of its most positively received games, Until Dawn. Besides being described as spiritual successor to the latter, The Quarry takes inspiration from teen slasher movies and other horror films. Much like the studio's claim to fame, The Quarry is a cinematic horror adventure game that has the same branching choice narrative, all dictated by the player's decisions. It essentially gives fans a playable horror movie, where the right choices can lead to every single character staying alive, with bad ones leading to everyone dying.

This cinematic style of presentation lends to a game that is arguably more fun to watch than play, especially taking into consideration The Quarry's multiple ending variations, with nearly 200 being available to find. This is compounded with the game's upcoming online multiplayer mode, which allowed for those who joined the game to vote on the critical decisions. While the game did come out on most consoles and PC, the game could have had a completely different launch platform: the Google Stadia.

According to sources close to the project, two games were originally being developed for Google's Stadia console, with The Quarry being one of them. These projects were meant to take advantage of the game's cloud technology and were going to draw players to the streaming service that the console was providing. These plans most likely fell through once Google announced a downsizing of Stadia and its gaming-focused operations in 2021.

Q3 Idyllic

While Supermassive Games and Google had announced a partnership back in 2020, neither company had revealed any games during that time. When The Quarry was first announced earlier this year, Supermassive Games revealed it was partnering with Take Two Interactive for publishing duties. The sources state that Supermassive Games was looking for a publisher who would help pick up the project since it was already near completion, with a representative from Take Two stating that the company was happy to help get the project out the door.

The other game that started out being developed for the Stadia was a game known as High On Life. This was a game developed by Squanch Games, with Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland being the project's lead. It was revealed at Microsoft and Bethesda's 2022 showcase last week, being a much more comedic take on the FPS genre, and it will release on Xbox consoles and PC next year.

The Quarry is currently available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
