The Outer Worlds is now available and has received impressive early critical acclaim. Obsidian's love letter to Fallout: New Vegas is realized. It's understandable then that as a result, The Outer Worlds is being compared to Bethesda's more recent Fallout games.

Fallout 76, in particular, is bearing the brunt of harsh comparisons due to the launch of a controversial subscription service. The ongoing comparisons have led to an older interview going around again where The Outer World's co-directors addressed the topic.

In an interview with Game Informer, co-directors Tim Cain and Leon Boyarsky are asked what they think of the comparison between The Outer Worlds and Fallout 76. Or more specifically, how support for The Outer Worlds is being used to insult and criticize Fallout 76. The pair are understandably frustrated with such sentiment. Cain says, "It's disheartening when your game is used to tear down another game," going on to say that isn't what they want or why they're making The Outer Worlds.

"No one sets out to make a bad game," says Boyarsky, elaborating in that all developers put their heart and soul into what they're working on. That fans might think The Outer Worlds is saying something against another game, or is being used in attacks against another game, isn't something the two are happy about. "We don't want to foster that kind of thing." Boyarsky explains that they hope fans will enjoy The Outer Worlds for what it is. "The world's big enough for a bunch of different kinds of games," adds Cain.

The video was specifically shared in The Outer Worlds' subreddit, where it climbed to the top quickly. The thread is full of fans of both Fallout and Obsidian's new RPG. No one wants to erase criticism where it's due, but many are clearly frustrated that such criticism is being associated with a game that doesn't want or deserve to be included in that argument. The top comment in the thread says it clearly, "Let's just enjoy this new, awesome RPG from Obsidian."

Boyarsky and Cain are both veteran developers with a vested interest in both Obsidian and Fallout. The two were part of the creative team that developed the original Fallout, after all. The two split after their independent studio, Troika Games, went out of business trying to find a publisher for a new post-apocalyptic RPG. Obsidian Entertainment went out of its way to invite both Boyarsky and Cain to the studio to help make The Outer Worlds. They clearly both care deeply about and support the genre.

The Outer Worlds is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
