The accuracy of the recent E3 2021 leak continues to be spot on as Obsidian Entertainment premieres the first trailer for The Outer Worlds 2 at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase event. With a relatively open-and-shut ending in the first game, audiences have been eager to see where the sequel would be heading. It appears they'll be waiting a while longer to find that out, as the trailer made it clear the game is still so early in development, there was nothing to show at the conference.
The first The Outer Worlds 2 trailer will surely go down as one of the funniest at E3 this year, as well as one of the least informative. Instead of the typical presentation, Obsidian instead used its time to poke fun at the generic formula of many video game trailers. In its announcement trailer, a narrator does a play-by-play of what's on-screen, showing creatures that won't actually be present in the final game, pointing out the coolness of slow motion, and generally being hilariously self-aware.
What audiences do get is a look at a possible planet's landscape and the protagonist, but only their silhouette. The narrator states that Obsidian hasn't finished enough of the game to really show anything this year. All that's ready is the title, which is revealed at the end of the trailer.
The first The Outer Worlds is still considered one of the best games set in space, ranking alongside heavy hitters like Halo and Mass Effect. Unlike many titles on that list, however, it didn't take itself too seriously and jumps at the opportunity to inject humor into even the direst of circumstances. With its delightful characters and companions, interesting worlds to explore, and focus on player choices and customization, The Outer Worlds was well-reviewed by the gaming community when it released.
The series channels many elements from the popular Fallout title New Vegas, which was also developed by Obsidian. While the original The Outer Worlds was a solid title, it wasn't quite the spiritual successor longtime fans had hoped for. With a sequel now on the way, there's another opportunity for the developer to capture that same lightning in a bottle. The Outer Worlds 2 still might not fill the void left by Fallout: New Vegas, but that doesn't mean players won't enjoy the effort.
