Not a word has been said about The Outer Worlds 2 since its very self-aware debut trailer, at least officially anyway. There are some indications that The Outer Worlds 2 is further along in development than the trailer would have led players to believe, but still, it’s a mystery. All players really know is that it will feature a new crew in a new solar system.

Leaving Halcyon behind may be bittersweet for fans, but it may be the best decision since The Outer Worlds 2 is skipping PS5. Nonetheless, leaving Halcyon behind may also mean addressing one very big piece of lore: colonies outside Halcyon.

The Halcyon Colony in The Outer Worlds

At the end of the Outer Worlds, players essentially leave Halcyon to the Board’s control or in a position where it must survive on its own. Players know the Earth has gone dark and is not communicating with Halcyon, for reasons unknown. And it’s easy to feel alone in the Outer Worlds when colonies or life outside Halcyon is intentionally hidden from characters.

Players, as well as many characters, are left completely in the dark about life outside Halcyon from Earth and otherwise. This would suggest that there’s a bigger truth to be discovered, as to why the Halcyon companies don’t want players to know about other colonies. Is there something happening across multiple star systems that has left Halcyon stranded, or is it simply that corporate greed isn’t as domineering in other Solar Systems? Are other colonies doing better, meaning the corporations of The Outer Worlds are trying to hide this from its colonists, or are they falling apart due to corporate expansion?

Players don’t know, and that’s purposeful. Anything is possible outside of Halcyon because of how limited the information about it is. Going to a new Solar System in The Outer Worlds 2, however, means something is going to be proven one way or another, whether or not the stories are tied.

A New Colony in The Outer Worlds 2, but Earth May Still Be Dark

To make matters worse, it’s likely that the Earth is still dark in communications with this new colony. This seems to be a big plot point, one that won’t likely be fully addressed in The Outer Worlds 2, but it would be interesting to visit the Sol System one day. But the truth is, whatever players do find in this new Solar System, it’s likely to be cut off from everywhere else (except maybe large corporations).

It’ll be interesting then to see how this lore is handled and how much of an impact The Outer Worlds players’ choices and relationships influence this new colony. Players will just have to wait and see what’s going on.

The Outer Worlds 2 is in development.
