NBC's The Office is easily one of the most popular sitcoms to come out of the 2000s. While it received very mixed reviews upon airing the first season due to its awkward and uncomfortable atmosphere birthed out of realism, fans would later fall in love with Michael Scott, Dwight, Jim, Pam, and the rest of the regular and recurring cast, leading to its current popularity and NBC adding it to its own streaming service, Peacock.

In a quirky turn of events, an Office mobile game has officially launched, showcasing the series' inherent legacy, titled The Office: Somehow We Manage, the subtitle being a reference to Michael Scott's self-written non-fiction book, Somehow I Manage. It's not quite the way that fans might expect the series to continue as opposed to some kind of Office reunion with the beloved cast, and likewise, it's received mixed reviews ranging from blissful nostalgia and distaste for the in-app purchases.

Everything You Need to Know About The Office: Somehow We Manage

The premise of Somehow We Manage should feel very familiar to The Office fans because it rehashes a plot point from early on in the series. Players must save the Scranton branch from downsizing by selling paper, the core function of Dunder Mifflin. It's a management game where players must balance their profits with their expenses—for example, the notorious corporate end of the company takes their share of the profits at the end of each business day—but simply skinned with the familiar floor plan of The Office and a handful of its characters.

Many of the series' best jokes are presented in comic format throughout the game, but unfortunately, they don't quite land the same way without the actors' excellent delivery, according to recent reviewers of the app. Even The Office's iconic intro sequence has been remade in the mobile game's cartoonish form, but it might just feel like a cash grab pandering to long-time fans of the series, utilizing jokes like Dwight's belongings encased in jello, Prison Mike, and Dwight getting two plaques as a reward from corporate. Still, the game cleverly weaves together the tone and humor from The Office, like Pam's role as the receptionist and her relationship with Jim now allows her to automate Jim's desk as well as other employees in the office.

Somehow We Manage is broken down into episodes, each filled with milestones like automating a salesperson's desk, collecting coffee, one of the main in-game currencies along with Scottcoins. Each episode is also based on The Office's best episodes like "The Dundies" and "Health Care."

This style is a very common pattern for the mobile publishing team East Side Games Studio, which has also published mobile games under properties like the adult cartoon Archer, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and RuPaul's Drag Race, and many of its games share a similar free-to-play style.

But if players are looking to relive the best moments of The Office, it might be worth getting a subscription to Peacock or purchasing the series as a whole. While it might be nostalgic to some degree, many fans agree that it's a hollow depiction of a great series. On the other hand, fans might appreciate the throwback and find the app a fun way to pass the time.
