X-Men spin-off film The New Mutants has had a rocky road to release, to put it lightly. After an Amazon listing suggested it might release digitally, the official New Mutants Twitter account debunked that theory by announcing a new theater date today: August 28, 2020.

Originally, the film was supposed to come out in 2018 before X-Men: Dark Phoenix was given priority. After Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, The New Mutants hit a number of missed release dates, most recently on April 3 before the ongoing coronavirus pandemic led to the shutdown of movie theaters and other public gathering places.

Since that tweet was released by the official New Mutants account, it was confirmed that Regal Cinemas and AMC will be carrying the film via the chains' social media accounts. Despite its recent troubles, AMC has decided it won't play Universal movies in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East because of the distributor's decision to continue releasing movies like Trolls World Tour early via video on demand.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, Marvel has had to delay other films beyond The New Mutants, including Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness.

The New Mutants will release in theaters on August 28, 2020.
