Of the upcoming next-gen titles releasing for Xbox Series X/S, The Medium is one that many in the gaming community have had their eye on for some time now. With numerous unsettling and atmospheric elements, dynamic camera perspectives, and imagery that harkens back to the early days of Silent Hill, The Medium has set itself up to be a desired horror title for the next console generation. However, it's possible that the game may eventually come to another platform.
Bloober Team, the development studio behind The Medium, has developed a number of well-received horror games, with titles like the Layers of Fear series and Observer being some of the studio's best known games. However, what arguably makes The Medium different from previous titles is the exclusivity of the game, considering that it's releasing only on PC and next-gen Xbox systems.
In the past, The Medium developers have said this game could only work on next-gen hardware, and thus warrants its exclusivity on next-gen consoles. However, in a recent VG247 interview with lead designer Wojciech Piejko and producer Jacek Zieba, when asked if the game could come to PS5 in the future, Zieba said they were primarily focusing on Xbox and PC, and that players would have to "wait and see on that one."
Based on that response, a PlayStation port sounds somewhat unlikely, but it is important to note that the studio's previous title Blair Witch was assumed to be an Xbox exclusive before it released on PS4 later in the year. So far, Bloober Team has remained steadfast in its decision to release exclusively on next-gen, but the PS5 does fall under that umbrella, so the likelihood of The Medium coming to PS5 doesn't seem too far out of the realm of possibility.
On top of this, The Medium has many desirable traits that fans have been looking for in a horror game for quite some time now. With the numerous callbacks and nods to Silent Hill, a franchise that's largely popular on PlayStation platforms, The Medium might just be the Silent Hill experience that fans have been wanting for several years.
In any case, the decision ultimately rests on Bloober Team. To be fair, the game hasn't even released on the platforms it was originally intended for, so it's possible the developers are simply focused on releasing the game. Although, given the treatment given to Blair Witch, the possibility of a PlayStation port certainly exists. Fans will just have to wait and find out.
The Medium is set to release on January 28 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
