After many years, The Matrix is coming back to theaters with The Matrix Resurrections, a continuation of the series, although no one is sure what direction it will take said series in. With a new teaser for The Matrix Resurrections revealing ticket sale times, it's sure to draw a sizable crowd.
With how little is still known about The Matrix Resurrections, there's a lot of speculation and hype about what it could be about and how the Matrix series as a whole could be effected. One sphere beyond film where it might touch is video games, and it seems there may be at least one new addition on that front.
A leak revealed the existence of what seems to be a Matrix video game project titled The Matrix Awakens. As of this article, little is known about the title except that it will be on the PSN and, by extension, on the PS5 and that it is being made in Unreal Engine. In fact, it is billed as "an Unreal Engine 5 Experience." This comes fairly soon on the heels of a Matrix crossover with Fortnite being leaked, illustrating The Matrix's attempts to re-integrate into the popular zeitgeist.
As of this article it is not known how much, if at all, The Matrix Awakens will actually tie into The Matrix Resurrections, or even if it will be a full game. After all, if it is being billed as an "experience," so it may simply prove to be a tour through parts of the Matrix and its lore that have not been revealed before. If it is a game it may have little to do with the movie, despite The Matrix Resurrections reuniting the main cast, something players would no doubt love to control.
While The Matrix Resurrections could achieve success or be an enormous failure, the success or failure of The Matrix Awakens stands largely apart from the film. Previous Matrix titles have stood on their own and become favorites even when they were adaptations of less popular films.
Hopefully the end result will be a good video game in The Matrix Awakens and a good film in The Matrix Resurrections, but even one of the two will be cause for celebration. While the film's writer declared that The Matrix Resurrections subverts blockbuster expectations, only time will tell if it does so in a good way or a bad way.
The Matrix Resurrections comes to theaters and the HBO Max streaming service on December 22nd, 2021.
