Not long after dropping the first official The Marvels trailer, it’s pretty clear that the teaser was no slam dunk for the MCU, as it only took a couple of days for it to get a worrying number of dislikes that suggests a lot of people are not digging this Marvel team-up.

Although this Marvel Studios movie will finally get Carol Danvers, Monica Rambeau, and Kamala Khan together, Captain Marvel 2 has been hit by four delays since its original release date for the summer of 2023 was first shifted. Despite rumors of positive test screenings for The Marvels surfacing last month, this has produced a less-than-ideal environment for the preview to be dropped, and it’s starting to show on YouTube.

At the time of writing, The Marvels teaser trailer has received 401,000 likes versus 365,000 hits to the dislike button. With the video netting over 13.5 million views overall on YouTube, these metrics still show positive reactions slightly outweigh negative ones. However, the entire situation becomes more concerning once one realizes the first preview for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has 764,000 likes and 17,000 dislikes, which is pretty much in line with the MCU's standards for trailer reveals.

For further context, the divisive She-Hulk series drew 786,000 likes and 553,000 dislikes for its official trailer. However, even that trailer was marred by fans blasting Marvel Studios for the main character's CGI design. It’s not as if things look much brighter for The Marvels in other parts of the world, as Marvel's official channels for Latin America, Spain, or Indonesia show a far worse reception than the main video.

So why are The Marvels getting such negative feedback already? While some might point to it being a symptom of future review-bombing, the truth is that even Ms. Marvel's trailer debut kept up with the MCU's overwhelmingly positive welcome from fans; the same goes for the other two protagonists' past appearances. There is no precedent for any Marvel Studios production failing to produce excitement among the fan base as in this case, especially when the Marvel trailers tend to do such a good job at selling its stories and products.

It’s hard to say The Marvels teaser looks terrible. However, by the same measure, there’s nothing truly remarkable about it, unlike Doctor Strange 2, which got people going with a nod to the X-Men that ultimately did not pay off how many fans expected.

The Marvels is scheduled for release on November 10, 2023.
