Season 2 of The Mandalorian has reached its finale, and as audiences shifted back from their precarious positions at the edges of their seats while stopping to lift their jaws from the floor, they were greeted with yet another surprise. A spinoff that many expected and even more hoped for has finally been revealed, and it looks like it will tap into plenty of nostalgia.
Boba Fett, the fan-favorite Star Wars bounty hunter who finally got his chance to truly shine in The Mandalorian, will head his own series starting next year on Disney+. Going by the title The Book of Boba Fett, the series currently has little information to give on its premise. However, fans can pretty easily form a theory based on the manner in which the spinoff was revealed.
After the episode's credits ran, audiences gleefully got to return to Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine, last seen in Return of the Jedi. An inside shot shows Jabba's former majordomo, Bib Fortuna, seemingly having taken over his old master's place. Unfortunately for him, his new life of luxury is cut short when Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) and Boba Fett himself (Temuera Morrison) crash the party, taking out everyone there, but notably allowing the slaves to leave. The teaser ends as Boba takes a seat on the throne while Fennec takes a swig of some commandeered treasure, setting a decidedly less "noble" tone than viewers have come to expect from The Mandalorian.
It was just the last of several cheer-inducing moments and Easter eggs seen throughout the season finale, and for the sake of spoilers, it will be the only one mentioned here. The Mandalorian has thrived in satisfying reveals and surprises since it premiered, and that clearly hasn't changed. The Book of Boba Fett will not only give a starring role to a character whose popularity rose up entirely based on how cool he looked, but it also seems to cleverly be treating Fennec Shand the same way. She was already notorious when she first appeared on The Mandalorian, but fans only had to take the show's word for it. If that was intentional, it was pretty sneaky of the production team.
At this point, it almost seems easier to ask who isn't getting a spinoff. If nothing else, Disney clearly knows how to milk a property for all it's worth. Of course, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The Mandalorian has been almost universally praised across the board, and that praise includes its characters. If Disney hadn't announced spinoffs like Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett, it's highly likely fans would have been begging for them anyway, particularly since rumors about a Boba Fett series had already been swirling around for some time before the reveal.
So Star Wars fans have a hefty chunk of entertainment in their future, probably more than many of them had ever expected. Here's hoping they all maintain a similar level of quality, because after all, this is the way.
The Book of Boba Fett will premiere on Disney+ in December 2021.
