Sandra Bullock often appears in comedies, that's why it's so refreshing to see her in a more serious movie, such as this crime thriller. Two young students, Richard and Justin, decide to commit the perfect murder. Sandra Bullock plays Cassie, the relentless detective who's trying to crack the case.
Ryan Gosling and Michael Pitt give excellent performances as Richard and Justin, respectively, but Sandra Bullock's Cassie is much more sympathetic in her effort to solve the murder and get justice for the woman who was killed. The movie offers more than one clever plot twist and keeps the audience hooked until the end since they want to know whether Cassie will succeed in her effort or not.
4 Practical Magic (1998)
Sandra Bullock has appeared in a fair share of genres, including a fantasy comedy in which she played a witch. But whoever would think that having magic powers would make life that much easier would be in for a surprise. Bullock's Sally and her sister Gillian, played by Nicole Kidman, can't find love because of a curse that states that everyone who gets involved with them will die.
Despite that, the two sisters give relationships a chance, and later have to deal with the consequences. Practical Magic is best to watch during Halloween, but all fans of this genre as well as Bullock and Kidman can enjoy it anytime. It helps that the movie has a dark sense of humor, keeps a fast pace, and that Bullock gives a magical performance in the movie.
3 The Thing Called Love (1993)
These days, Sandra Bullock is one of the most famous actresses but just like everyone, she also had to start her career somewhere. Before she became a household name, Bullock played the singer Linda in The Thing Called Love, a movie about aspiring country music singers. Even though the movie focuses on several heroes, they all have one thing in common. They're young, ambitious, love music, and also struggle with love.
Bullock's Linda is one of the more sympathetic characters and even though she doesn't have as much space as in her later movies, she already shows she can act. The movie has a talented cast overall, starring the late River Phoenix, as well as Samantha Mathis. If somebody wants to learn more about Bullock's older work, The Thing Called Love is an ideal opportunity to do so.
2 The Lake House (2006)
Even though The Lake House has almost 150 thousand ratings on IMDb, it still didn't get as much attention as Bullock's other movies. That will be especially unfortunate for all fans of unusual romantic movies. The Lake House mixes things up by including a science fiction element. The doctor Kate Forster and the architect Alex Wyler (Keanu Reeves) start sending messages to each other via a post box in front of Kate's house. They're astonished when they realize that they both live in the same house - except for the fact that Kate lives in it in 2006 and Alex in 2004.
Considering the original plot, the viewers are intrigued and want to know how the story will turn out, whether Kate and Alex will find their way to each other. Both Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves give solid performances, so all people who like romantic movies with a twist should give The Lake House a chance. The main acting duo works well together, quite possibly because it's not the first time they appeared in leading roles in the same movie, as they played together in the 1994 action movie Speed.
1 Infamous (2006)
A lot of movies based on real events become major hits and even do well at the Oscars. Some fly under the radar, though, and that's also the case of this movie. Toby Jones stars as the writer Truman Capote who initially leads a peaceful life but becomes more and more immersed in a murder case as he's get acquainted with the murderers. The movie stars multiple well-known names, such as Daniel Craig as one of the murderers, Perry Smith, Sigourney Weaver, or Gwyneth Paltrow.
Even though the main focus lies on Toby Jones, fans of Sandra Bullock will appreciate her role in the movie. Bullock plays another well-known writer, Nelle Harper Lee, who became famous thanks to her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The actors all give solid performances, the events of the movie will be surprising to those unfamiliar with Truman Capote's life and Infamous creates a strong atmosphere of times now gone, as it takes place in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
