As expected, The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was featuring during Nintendo's E3 2019 Direct. Part of the surprise was a bit dampened earlier in the day, thanks to Amazon Japan jumping the gun on the release date. Still, the lengthy trailer that appeared not only showed off plenty of new gameplay, but also some interesting gameplay mechanics.

The trailer gave fans another look at the classic tale reimagined inside of the visual overhaul. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening features all of those classic moments, environments, and gear that players remember from the original game. The trailer also shows off some combat with gear like bombs, the bow and arrow, and classic sword and shield attacks.

The trailer also revealed a brand new mode coming to the game, one that shares more than a couple similarities to Nintendo's other popular franchise, Super Mario Maker. Though it's no where near as extensive, inside of Link's Awakening players can create their own dungeons. During the game, players come across dungeon layouts they can use in this mode.

From there, players organize and plan the layout of the dungeon in a puzzle piece style. These custom dungeons can then be played through by the player to earn additional rewards. In the trailer, Link earns a brand new fairy bottle for his trouble.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening was one of three different Zelda game reveals, a first for Nintendo. The second was a short trailer for Cadence of Hyrule, a smaller title developed as more of a crossover between Crypt of the NecroDancer and The Legend of Zelda. The surprise reveal was saved for the very end, however, as a short cinematic confirmed that Nintendo is indeed working on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. This was pretty shocking due to the fact that Nintendo typically doesn't discuss games that require more than a year of development time.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake launches on September 20, 2019 for the Nintendo Switch.
