Longtime fans of the franchise are probably aware of how confounded the Legend of Zelda timeline is. It has a ton of different breakpoints primarily depending on how the hero, Link, fares during the events of Ocarina of Time. Since its launch last year, many fans have been wondering how Breath of the Wild ties into this timeline, and Nintendo has finally given its answer. As it turns out, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild may make the series plot a bit less confusing.

The revised timeline now shows that Breath of the Wild is a convergence point for the series, meaning every prior possibility leads to the events of BotW, from Link's Awakening to Spirit Tracks. This adds a neat little bow to the franchise, at least until Nintendo decides to mix the timeline up once again with whatever comes after Breath of the Wild.

The revised timeline also switches Link's Awakening and Oracle of Ages and Seasons, with Link's Awakening now appearing first in the timeline. It isn't exactly an earth-shattering change, but it does make a tad bit more sense within the context of the of the plot.

The full history of the franchise is available on Nintendo's website, though the update is currently only on the Japanese version. Hyrule Historia, a book that recounts the events of the franchise in great detail, also doesn't cover Breath of the Wild, as that book released back in 2012. Hyrule Historia is an interesting read for any of the hardcore franchise fans who want a deeper look into the lore of the games, or even just want some cool artwork to admire.

The real question is whether or not Breath of the Wild solves a deeper issue with the timeline. While interesting, the multiple timelines could be a major turn off for lore enthusiasts who are trying to get into the franchise but can't get past the various divergence points. Breath of th Wild now acts as a neat period for the franchise, so going forward things could be much more simple if Nintendo chooses to keep it that way.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now on the Switch and Wii U.
