When cult classic RPG The Last Remnant was delisted from Steam earlier in the month, many were upset and confused as to why. Cut to Sony's pre-Tokyo Game Show stream and suddenly it made sense, as Square Enix will be releasing a remaster for the PS4.

Originally released on the Xbox 360 in 2008 and later for PC in 2009, the game was set in a world divided into multiple city-states, where the citizens were in conflict over ancient artifacts called Remnants. Players take control of Rush Sykes, who is on a quest to find his kidnapped sister, commanding unions composed of many characters to battle monsters and travel the land. It was intended to release on the PS3 as well but that never came to be, so this upcoming remaster is making up for lost time.

Despite receiving relatively mixed reviews, the title became something of a cult classic, with many praising the unique battle system, music and setting. While the decision to remaster it is no doubt welcome, some fans may be somewhat frustrated that the original title is no longer available to download from Steam, since it's arguably another example of the industry stomping down on game preservation.

This wasn't the only news to come from Square Enix during the stream though. Another one of its lesser-known titles, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, will be remastered for both PS4 and Switch. A co-op multiplayer game originally released for the GameCube, it was one of the more novel Final Fantasy spin-offs and ended up starting its own sub-series of games.

Square Enix also released two new Kingdom Hearts related trailers. The first one was for the much anticipated Kingdom Hearts III, showing off some new gameplay and story details, including the first footage of the Big Hero 6 world (which was revealed back in 2015) where Sora will team up with Baymax. A longer version of the trailer with new footage is set to be released next week.

The second trailer was for a brand new VR experience where players can interact with iconic moments throughout the franchise's history. It will be released for free later this year.

The Last Remnant remaster will release as a downloadable title on December 6th in Japan. There's currently no word on a Western release.
