Fans of The Last of Us have been introduced to two new characters to stress over, with Henry and Sam making their way onto the show. While there’s no guarantee about what will happen to the pair, fans are scrambling back to the original versions of the characters in The Last of Us games in order to get a feel for what might be in store for the two.

While The Last of Us may seem like a franchise about surviving a zombie apocalypse, it’s really a drama series about dealing with loss. It centers around Joel and Ellie learning about each other, with other characters they encounter handling the dire situation in a different way.

In the fourth episode of The Last of Us, fans got their first taste of Sam and Henry. The two characters serve as foils to Joel and Ellie in some sense, with the brothers standing apart from the found family duo that the series revolves around.

Who are Sam and Henry in The Last of Us?

Sam and Henry are a pair of brothers in The Last of Us series who first appeared in the original game. Though they initially seem to be adversaries to Joel and Ellie, they become a party for a time as they travel across a Cordyceps-infested United States.

While Joel and Ellie are effectively an adoptive father and daughter, Sam and Henry are biological brothers. They originally hail from Hartford, Connecticut but were forced to hit the road when the armed forces protecting the city withdrew. Sam and Henry were part of a larger group of survivors who intended to travel west in hopes of finding and joining with the Fireflies.

As the group traveled through Pennsylvania, Sam and Henry are separated from the rest after battle with hunters that controlled the area surrounding Pittsburgh. They encounter Joel and Ellie in an abandoned commercial area. Though the two duos fight with one another when they first meet, Ellie and Sam convince Joel and Henry to work together and travel together. The two children become fast friends, but Joel and Henry remain at odds for a long while.

Will Sam and Henry Die in The Last of Us?

Odds are that Sam and Henry will die in The Last of Us TV show. The pair do not live through the events of The Last of Us Part I, meaning their chances of survival are bleak unless the show radically departs from the events of the game.

During the events of the game, Sam is wounded by one of the Infected. While the rest of the group is sleeping, he turns and later attacks them. As Sam is attacking Ellie, Henry shoots him and then turns the gun on himself.

The deaths of Sam and Henry are touched upon in The Last of Us Part II, with Ellie honoring their memories by holding onto a toy robot Sam kept with him despite the protestations of his brother. Because their demise is such a critical plot point, the show would be completely divorcing itself from the games if it opted to keep the pair alive. The show changed the story of characters like Bill and Frank in a positive way, but having Sam and Henry survive would be something else entirely.

The Last of Us is ongoing on HBO.
