‘The Last of Us’ Won’t Release In 2012

The Last of Us was undoubtedly the star of Sony’s E3 showing (sorry Wonderbook), and PlayStation 3 owners are definitely itching to play Naughty Dog’s latest. Unfortunately, Sony has confirmed the game won’t ship until 2013.

Sony’s president of WorldWide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, confirmed that The Last of Us won’t be releasing this year. Back in December, Naughty Dog stated the game has been in development for the past two years. With a 2013 release date, this would give it a longer development cycle than the Uncharted games, which are usually done in about 22 months – the length of development for Uncharted 2.

The Last of Us had previously been slated for a late 2012/early 2013 launch. It doesn’t seem likely that the game will launch later than April 2013, considering the recent PS4 rumors. If Sony is set to unveil the PS3 successor at E3 2013, the company probably wont want its new hardware unveil to overshadow The Last of Us, which could become a big seller.

Several screenshots from The Last of Us have also been released. Some of them are taken straight from the E3 demo Sony premiered on Monday evening. Much like ‘The Sky Has Turned Grey‘ trailer, the screenshots show off the dark world of The Last of Us, as well as convey the suvrival aspect of the game. Oh, and they’re also very pretty — though that’s to be expected.

There are still plenty of PS3 exclusive titles releasing this year, such as All-Stars Battle Royale and LittleBigPlanet Karting, in addition to some great indie titles. However, with games like God of War: Ascension, Beyond: Two Souls, and The Last of Us not releasing this year, PS3 owners will have to wait until 2013 to play some of the system’s most anticipated games.

The Last of Us releases in 2013 for the PS3.
