The Last of Us Part 1 has received a hotfix for PC intended to address memory and performance issues. Naughty Dog has been hard at work fixing the terrible state that The Last of Us Part 1 launched in earlier this week, which has now benefited from two patches in just as many days.

There was hope that The Last of Us Part 1 would prove to be yet another successful Sony port, especially after it was delayed three weeks in the interest of quality. However, those three weeks probably should have been three months if Steam reviews of The Last of Us Part 1 are anything to go by, which average out to a Mostly Negative rating with only 38% of them positive. Even positive reviews take aim at the poor port, advising players to let the shaders build before even thinking about starting up the game or risk the client crashing every few minutes. Naughty Dog was quick to acknowledge the glaring issues and has since followed through on its promise to address them, but there is still much work to be done.

The new hotfix is dedicated to memory and performance improvements, as well as improving the tools available for developers to track and identify issues. Naughty Dog has also set up a Known Issues page on its website that will continue to be updated as it works to fix The Last of Us Part 1. Some of the issues currently being investigated are a potential memory leak, how long shaders take to load, and the game refusing to boot despite meeting minimum requirements. Given the severity of these reported issues, it is no surprise that Naughty Dog has been fervently working to rectify them.

That said, many are unwilling to grant Naughty Dog any credit as they believe the game should not have been released in the first place. Fans were worried about The Last of Us Part 1 PC quality earlier this month when it was revealed that Iron Galaxy was involved in its development. Iron Galaxy's name was unfortunately tarnished by a disastrous port of Batman: Arkham Knight, which was lambasted by the gaming community for its poor performance and 30 frames per second lock.

But gamers have also been having fun, mostly by poking fun at the inexplicable glitches present in The Last of Us Part 1. One of the most infamous is where characters get progressively wetter across the duration of a cutscene, despite the absence of rain or water of any kind.

The Last of Us Part 1 PC v1.0.1.6 Patch Notes:

  • Decreased PSO cache size to reduce memory requirements and minimize Out of Memory crashes
  • Added additional diagnostics for developer tracking purposes
  • Increased animation streaming memory to improve performance during gameplay and cinematics
  • Fix for crash on boot relating to game save files

The Last of Us Part 1 is available now on PS5 and PC.
