Over the course of The Last of Us Part 1, players will obtain various types of weapons to ensure their survival as they fight off the Infected and hostile human factions. While players will also have access to weapons such as Molotovs, nail bombs, and numerous melee weapons, it is only the firearms that can have multiple upgrades. As introduced in the original game, weapon upgrades can be carried out with the use of a workbench.

Upgrades will require a certain number of parts, but players will notice that there are some upgrades that are not available and require a specific tool level. Players will need to collect the 5 Tool sets to access these advanced upgrades for their weapons, which can make all the difference when surviving in The Last of Us Part 1.

Bill's Town

The Last of Us Part I Tool 1

Players can find the first set of Tools in the basement of the church, where Bill will provide Joel with a shotgun and demonstrate how to make a nail bomb. Opposite where Bill is standing, players can head to the left to pick up the Tools from the toolbox.

Pittsburgh

The Last of Us Part I Tool 2

Immediately after players are ambushed by the Hunters, they will need to raise a door to a garage to get to safety. Players will find themselves in a room full of bodies and their possessions. An artifact here lists all the property taken from the victims of the Hunters that weren’t as lucky as Joel and Ellie. Behind them on a grey unit, players can collect the next set of Tools.

The Suburbs

The Last of Us Part I Tool 3

Players have two opportunities to collect Tools from this chapter. The first chance will be after Ellie fixes the generator in the sewers, where players must continue along the path until reaching a doorway to their left. Inside this room there is an old garden chair, next to which is a toolbox on the ground containing the next set.

Should players miss this, they can find another set of tools after Joel and Sam are separated from Ellie and Henry. In this section, players will be up against a group of Stalkers that they can choose to kill or bypass. In this instance, stealth will make retrieving these Tools more challenging as players will need to get to the opposite side of the area from where they first entered.

Taking a right from the entrance, players can follow the path around until they reach a short set of stairs and then go into the room with the bunk beds on the right. Between two of these beds will be the next set of Tools.

The University

The Last of Us Part I Tool 4

This set of Tools can be found on the second floor of the science building, which can be reached by climbing through a large gap in the side of the building. Players will need to walk down a long corridor until they reach the far end and to their right is a locked door that requires a shiv to open. Inside are numerous resources, including a Training Manual and the Tools.

Bus Depot

The Last of Us Part I Tool 5

As players enter the bus depot, they will see an abandoned tank in front. Players should go to the left of the tank to find the FEDRA triage tents and then go into the open tent with the large FEDRA logo on it. Inside, they'll be able to find the final Tool on a table.

After collecting all of the Tools in The Last of Us Part 1, players will be awarded the "Sharpest Tool in the Shed" trophy. This will also allow players to upgrade their weapons to level 5, and fully upgrading at least one weapon awards the "Combat Ready" trophy.

The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PlayStation 5 and a PC version is in development.
