After several months of rumors, The Last of Us Part 1 has officially been confirmed, with the remake getting its first trailer at Summer Game Fest. While the gameplay of the original The Last of Us will apparently be modernized in the PS5 remake, many fans have focused on the visuals.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of players have honed in on the new character models for The Last of Us Part 1, pointing out how much stronger the facial animation is within the remake. From Ellie’s anger when killing David to Joel’s intensity during certain scenes, the two protagonists feel more lifelike. The Clicker seen within this trailer also looked incredible, boasting a lot of detail on its mushroom-covered body as opposed to the muddy textures of the original game. However, some environmental shots were included in the reveal trailer as well, and one gamer has focused on them through comparison photos.

Reddit user DavidClue3 shared three different shots from the remake’s first trailer, with the first image providing the most obvious changes. Showcasing a water-filled city, the original game’s liquid pales in comparison to the detailed water of the remake. Reflections can be seen clearly, as well as a lot more vegetation around the pond - something that should make the game’s levels a lot more immersive. The Savage Starlight poster is a lot cleaner as well.

The second image highlights the university, with the sky being much darker in the new version - an appropriate change considering the injury Joel endures in this location. Alongside some tall grass that seems perfect for improved stealth gameplay like what is seen in The Last of Us 2, the building and statue seem more detailed. Intriguingly, Redditor DavidClue3 pointed out that one of the building’s in the university is not present in the shot from the remake, suggesting that the area could have been changed or expanded. While this is just speculation, the university would work well as a more open section.

The final image shows the bridge from near the end of the game, with players likely remembering the area well since it comes shortly before Joel’s assault on the Firefly hospital. As pointed out by several commenters, the biggest change with the remake is the mountains in the distance, as they are far more textured and realistic. Trees are larger and more foliage is present as well, just like with the other environments highlighted in DavidClue3’s comparison.

Based on what has been shown for The Last of Us Part 1 thus far, Naughty Dog has clearly made some substantial visual upgrades. Assuming that the gameplay improvements are just as significant, this remake could be worthwhile for new and old fans alike.

The Last of Us Part 1 launches on September 2 for PS5. A PC version is currently in development.
