The Last of Us has a remarkably bright future ahead of it with a reminder of what makes it special in HBO’s latest series. This will bring renewed attention to The Last of Us Part 2 by extension since the show’s second season will adapt the sequel, and a Part 3 seems largely inevitable at this point. It is still entirely possible that the show could be the catalyst for a The Last of Us prequel game that dives into content the show dipped its toes into more than the games, for example, and spin-offs could easily share stories about seemingly random characters in the same day-to-day struggle.

The Last of Us fans are eager for more of the franchise in any way they can get it, but they might not be kept waiting for much longer for Naughty Dog’s upcoming game if rumors about it turn out to be true. It was officially announced a while back that The Last of Us is receiving a multiplayer spin-off game set in San Francisco, and there have not been any details shared about it since. It is currently the only announced Naughty Dog game in development, however, and the possibility that it could launch on PS4 might offer some insight into when it can be expected to launch.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Job Listing Hints at PS4 Release

Because fans have still not heard from Naughty Dog about the game since its initial reveal and subsequent concept art with any substantial update, any news will come across as being significant. There have been many rumors circling The Last of Us’ multiplayer game, and the most recent one is that it will launch on PS4 due to a mention of the last-gen console on a Naughty Dog job listing.

This has not been confirmed or addressed by Naughty Dog, but the likelihood of it being true is worrisome due to the implications that would have on the game. Rather, the silver lining in The Last of Us’ multiplayer game releasing on PS4 is that it could be released fairly soon as a result.

It could be presumed that The Last of Us’ multiplayer game would likely be PS5 exclusive if it was released much later, when the PS4 might already be out the door in terms of still having new games releasing on it. Many games have already made the inevitable transition to being PS5-exclusive, and fans would surely want to see this multiplayer game avoid a PS4 release if it meant that it could be seen to its fullest potential on the current-gen.

The Last of Us Multiplayer Coming to PS4 Would Be a Big Mistake

Because of the obvious limitations that games have when stuck on last-gen consoles, The Last of Us’ multiplayer would be shooting itself in the foot on PS4. It is true that having it launch on both PS4 and PS5 would appease fans who have not been able to get their hands on a PS5 yet, but the number of fans who have been unable to make that transition is thinning as time goes on and supply continues to replenish.

Besides, instead of PS4, the more advantageous option for Naughty Dog would be to launch its The Last of Us multiplayer game on PC and PS5 in order to hand it to PC players on release. This would be a unique approach that means there is no platform exclusivity for it in substitution for a greater playerbase with a platform included that already chiefly supports online play.

The Last of Us Part 1 releases on PC later this month, as have many other PS5-exclusives, and this multiplayer game would make a tremendous splash if fans did not need to wait six months before it too could potentially land on PC. That said, The Last of Us’ original Factions multiplayer was only ever available on PlayStation, though following that trend would be another way Naughty Dog could be shooting itself in the foot and leaving money on the table.

A The Last of Us multiplayer game is currently in development.
