The Last of Us is a brilliant game. Everyone knows that. Naughty Dog put an unbelievable amount of work into the game, and it shows. The gameplay is rich and deep, the graphics are stunning, and the story is emotional and very competently told.

It is also filled with an unbelievable amount of detail. Whether it's an easter egg no one noticed, a cute structural trick, or some details hidden within the animations and game world, The Last of Us is ripe with interesting things to find and discover. And chances are that you missed a few of them.

These are ten hidden details everyone missed in The Last of Us.

10 The Game Mirrors Itself

The opening and closing of the game serve as intentional mirrors of each other. In the beginning, we open on Sarah's face. We then escape through the chaos while holding Sarah in our arms before she is shot and killed. During the game's climax, Joel carries Ellie in a very similar manner as to how he carried Sarah, and it too ends in a gunshot as Joel decides to shoot and kill Marlene. The game also closes on a shot of Ellie's face, and the game comes full circle by acknowledging Joel's new daughter. We just wonder how much love she feels in return...

9 The Irish Pub

One unique location in The Last of Us is the Irish pub. It's called, rather stereotypically, O'Sullivan's Irish Pub, and it is located in Pittsburgh. Granted, you don't spend a long time in its interior, but it should have left an indelible mark on Naughty Dog fans everywhere. Those who played Uncharted 3 just two years prior may notice that O'Sullivan's is laid out in a very similar manner to the pub seen in the opening of Uncharted 3. It also interesting to note that O'Sullivan's NEARLY shares the name of Uncharted protagonist Sully, AKA Sullivan. Cute Easter egg, or shared universe? You be the judge.

8 Naughty Dog Mousepad

Now this is a hidden detail that only the most devout and detail-seeking fans have found. This little Easter egg can also be found in the Pittsburgh chapter. Shortly after meeting Sam and Henry, you can enter an apartment by yourself while the other three wait in the stairwell. In the teens' room on the left is a computer desk, on that computer desk is a mousepad with a very obvious Naughty Dog logo. We know it's just a harmless Easter egg, but this brings up some MAJOR questions regarding the game's universe and our own. Obviously Naughty Dog exists in this universe. Does that mean The Last of Us does as well!?

7 PlayStation 3

Naughty Dog obviously exists in this universe, so of course the PlayStation 3 does as well. We wouldn't blame you if you missed this, because it can be found in the section where Ellie is escaping from the cannibals, and that section is tense as all heck. You don't exactly have time to sight see. The console can be found on a shelf in one of the empty stores. Once you enter through the window, one of the goons will mention something about no longer humoring David. Once you dispose of him, you can spot the console sitting on a shelf near the entrance. And may we say, that is one massive console.

6 Ellie Gets Bored

Ellie is only 14 years old, and like most 14 year olds, she can grow quite irritable and bored. If, for whatever reason, you stop playing the game and leave Joel standing idly by, Ellie will quickly grow restless and begin entertaining herself. This includes making humorous observations and interjections and may even remark on Joel's inopportune and frustrating lack of movement. She also makes guitar noises with her mouth, plays with her knife, and fidgets with her backpack and hair. And now we're just imagining Ashley Johnson recording those lines, and that's just hilarious.

5 Cordyceps Is Based On A Real Disease

The Last of Us came during the boon of the zombie genre, but it did something that few, if any, others did - utilized a real world disease. In the game, humans are affected by a mutated strain of the cordyceps fungus. This sounds made up, but it is horrifyingly real. Luckily, it only infects insects and arthropods, so humans are safe. For now. As seen in the game, the fungus completely takes over a host's body, and the host sprouts elongated fruiting bodies. It also infects the host's brain, essentially turning it into a zombie before the fruiting bodies erupt and spread its spores. Nature is freaking terrifying.

4 The Eye Chart

Naughty Dog seemingly knows that the final part of the game is quite the challenge. Luckily, they've included a lovely little bit of motivation! While wandering and making your way through the hospital, you may notice that there are several conventional eye charts on the wall. If you actually take the time to focus on and read one, you'll see that Naughty Dog included a little message to the game's players - "run your nearly there dont quit." Sure, it should have been "you're" (or youre) and not "your," little grammatical error aside, this is still a fun little Easter egg.

3 Naughty Dog Characters

Apparently Naughty Dog loves sneaking references to their past games into the newest releases. In The Last of Us, you can spot both a Nathan Drake doll and a Jax and Daxter pinata while perusing the Pittsburgh apartments. They can both be found immediately after meeting Sam and Henry. In one room, the Nathan Drake doll can be found lying on a bed. It's a little dark and hard to see, so the flashlight may come in handy. On the dresser opposite the bed sits very clear Jax and Daxter pinatas. Clearly this person was a huge Naughty Dog fan...

2 Joel's Gray Hairs

This one may be a little obvious, depending on who you ask, but it's still a very interesting attention to detail that some games may not have put the effort into. At the beginning of the game, Joel looks to be in his early 30s, and as such, still has a full head of brown hair. Following the brief prologue, twenty years pass, and Joel is now in his early 50s. He surprisingly still has a full head of hair, but both it and his beard hair have significantly grayed, showing both the passage of time and the role that stress has played on his physical body.

1 Tess's Body

One of the first victims of The Last of Us is Tess. Tess becomes bitten and infected while smuggling Ellie with Joel, and as such, decides to stay behind as authorities storm the building. Both Joel and Ellie hear the resulting gunshots, and Joel even comments on it before journeying on. However, curious players can crouch while above the lobby and peek over the railing to see the soldiers hovering over Tess's body, which now lays on the ground in a pool of blood. So put the theories to rest - Tess is most definitely dead.
