The Last of Us made waves when it first launched in 2013, quickly earning praise for its story and being hailed as one of the best video games ever made. Considering the game's cinematic nature, it has naturally caught the attention of Hollywood, with a Last of Us film adaptation in the works at one point only to be scrapped in favor of a Last of Us TV series on HBO. The Last of Us TV series is expected to premiere at some point next year, but in the meantime, fans can check out a Last of Us fan film to whet their appetite for live-action content.

Directed, written, and produced by Joshua Toonen, The Last of Us fan film Stay starts with Last of Us 2's Ellie playing a guitar, mimicking some of the scenes from the game's trailers. But while Ellie is featured in The Last of Us fan film, Stay is really the story of original characters Sean and Emily, showing viewers their lives prior to the outbreak and how it compares now that they're fighting for their lives in post-apocalyptic United States.

The Last of Us fan film Stay definitely nails the look, feel, and general tone of the video game. Viewers get to see Sean and Emily fight against Last of Us monsters like Clickers as they explore abandoned houses and loot for supplies. Unfortunately, things don't exactly go well for Sean and Emily, which is what one would expect from a short film set in the world of The Last of Us.

Stay has impressive visual effects and does a great job of telling an original story set in The Last of Us universe. The HBO series, meanwhile, will be more of a direct adaptation of the video game. Pedro Pascal's Joel and Bella Ramsey's Ellie will be going through the same trials and tribulations as their characters did in the video games, though there will undoubtedly be some tweaks here and there.

The Last of Us TV series has started production, but the first season isn't expected to drop until sometime in 2022. The Last of Us Season 1 will consist of 10 episodes that will adapt the story of the first game. It's unclear if it will touch on any of the events that happen in The Last of Us 2, and it seems fans will have to wait until they get to watch the show themselves to get answers.

The Last of Us is out now for PS3 and PS4.
