The Last of Us' Cordyceps Brain Infection is a mutated strain that parasitically affects its host and remote interiors that are filled with fungal spores. Further, the Cordyceps fungal infection led to quarantine zones and restrictions of human activity due to so much devastation was caused by the infected creatures that the fungus breeds in The Last of Us.

Indeed, the fungal infection evolves and develops through further stages of worsened mutations that in turn create more difficult enemies in The Last of Us and The Last of Us 2 for players to encounter, while never compromising the narrative experience of either game. From runners to bloaters, there are many different infected types that players face in combat. Recently, a fan artist has chosen to depict one of The Last of Us' more terrifying infected enemies, resulting in an amazing piece.

Reddit user gudetama9 shared an original pencil drawing of a clicker from The Last of Us with stunning detail. Because gudetama9 states that the drawing she shares is currently in an unfinished condition, it is possible that they plan to add more to the illustration or make changes. Regardless, gudetama9's fantastic pencil-work showcases an early stage in a clicker's developmental stage, where a lot of the clicker's former skin complexion is still visible.

Clickers are physically distinct due to the horrific fungi pustules that are seen blooming outward from the center of their faces, rendering them effectively blind. These pustules continue to spread along the infected's exterior anatomy until they overwhelm the infected individual's body, but clickers still maintain some sense of resemblance to their human anatomy and figure.

Runners are the feeblest and most common stage of infected enemies that players meet in The Last of Us, though they are also the fastest, sprinting steadfast at players once alerted. But although infected nonetheless, Runners do not quite demonstrate the same symptoms as clickers, who truly present The Last of Us' unique body horror. Reddit user gudetama9's work-in-progress illustration demonstrates this perfectly, with the infected woman's open mouth beneath two fungal plates that have erupted through her face.

Clickers are intimidating during gameplay sequences because of their acute echolocation, and an interaction with a clicker almost always ensures an instantaneous death unless the player has ample shivs, supplemental upgrades, or ammunition to take it on from a distance. Narratively, clickers are horrific, and gudetama9's illustration is adept at depicting this stage of the fungal infection's gruesome condition in The Last of Us.

The Last of Us 2 is available now on PS4.
