Sony and Naughty Dog revealed a brand new trailer for The Last of Us Part Two at Paris Games Week. But while fans were delighted to see more from the highly anticipated game, the new footage has also inspired many theories about the series' lore.

One of the most popular theories that The Last of Us Part Two fans have come up with is that the woman being hanged in the trailer is Ellie's mother, Anna. By the time the first game begins Anna has already died (Anna asked Marlene, the Fireflies leader, to watch over Ellie) but the scene from the trailer could be a flashback.

Ellie was born several years after the outbreak began and the woman (who may or may not be Anna) does seem to be pregnant. The character's pregnancy is also the reason why the antagonist of the trailer scene, Emily, hesitates as she's about to stab the woman in the stomach. Could it be that Emily knew the woman's child would be significant when it comes to understanding the Cordyceps outbreak and its effects on the human body? Emily and her henchmen seem too organized to be opportunistic kidnappers and they may be part of a larger conspiracy or group.

Admittedly, fans do not have a great deal to go on because this is their first glimpse of the woman who could be Anna and very little is known about her. However, when Naughty Dog confirmed some details about the new characters, including their names and who plays them, the developer didn't disclose the name of the woman who may be Anna. All fans know is that she is played by Laura Bailey (who also played Nadine in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy).

Naughty Dog is a seasoned developer that likes to sprinkle breadcrumbs for its fans to follow. The developer teased The Last of Us in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and it even hinted at The Last of Us Part Two ahead of the official announcement (though fans didn't pick up on that). Fans have also noted hidden secrets in TLOUP2 posters.

It's clear that the game's development team wants players to ask questions about its world and what the new game holds, including possible backstory about Ellie's mother. Although it's unclear exactly when Naughty Dog may address fans' speculation and confirm or deny the theories, the rumors and whisperings are expected to continue for a while.

The Last of Us: Part 2 is currently in development as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.
