Fans have been waiting since 2013 for The Last of Us 2, and luckily, their wait is finally nearing its end. After The Last of Us 2 release date leaked on a Swedish retail site, Naughty Dog has since confirmed that the long-awaited game's release date is February 21, 2020.
The Last of Us 2 was one of the games featured most-prominently in Sony's latest State of Play presentation. For the uninitiated, State of Play is a relatively new video series by Sony where it focuses on upcoming PlayStation games, not unlike Nintendo's Nintendo Direct presentations. The Last of Us 2 release date announcement is easily one of the biggest reveals to be featured in a State of Play to date, and may raise expectations for future presentations.
Besides revealing the Last of Us 2 release date, the PlayStation State of Play presentation also showed off some new gameplay and story details. The biggest revelation from the trailer was the first appearance of Joel, who has clearly aged and is definitely not a hallucination, as some have theorized.
So far, The Last of Us 2 is only pegged for release on the PS4, but some rumors have suggested that could change in the future. In fact, there have been multiple reports that Sony is eyeing The Last of Us 2 as a PS5 launch title. This would make a great deal of sense, as it would help bolster the PS5's early library of games, and something similar happened with the first game. As some may recall, The Last of Us was a hit on PS3 before it was remastered for the PS4 and released on the new console.
Presumably, a PS5 version of The Last of Us 2 would come with similar enhancements as we saw with the PS4 version of the first game. This could include visual upgrades, and maybe even new content. But that's just speculation at this time, and before we can worry too much about a hypothetical PS5 version of Naughty Dog's highly anticipated survival-horror adventure game, the PS4 version needs to release first.
The Last of Us 2 launches on February 21, 2020 for PS4.
