The Last of Us 2: Part 2 is one of the last big PlayStation 4 exclusives in the pipeline, and since it's the latest project from the award-winning studio Naughty Dog, it understandably has fans excited. Fans have been waiting to play The Last of Us 2 for years, and while we still don't know when the game is going to come out, an online retailer may have just leaked its release date.
The Slovakian online gaming store ProGamingShop has The Last of Us 2 listed for a September 28, 2019 release date. September 28 falls on a Friday, and is in the middle of the fall gaming rush, so this potential release date isn't completely unbelievable. However, before fans get too excited at September 28 being the actual Last of Us 2 release date, they should note that this is likely just a placeholder date.
In fact, ProGamingShop has been the source of another recent release date "leak," where it claimed that Cyberpunk 2077's release date is November 28, 2019. The leaked Cyberpunk 2077 release date is much harder to believe than The Last of Us 2 release date because the former lands on Thursday, not to mention Thanksgiving, which would be a rather strange day to release a video game. It seems as though the site just uses the 28th of whatever month as placeholder dates for upcoming games.
2019 release dates for The Last of Us 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 just seem a little too ambitious. The Last of Us 2 has just finished filming its motion capture scenes, and so it seems like the game may still be a ways off from release. Animators still have to animate the scenes, and there is likely a lot of other post-production work that will go into the process. With the knowledge that The Last of Us 2 motion capture work just recently wrapped, it seems unlikely that the game could possibly meet a release date as early as September 28, 2019.
A more realistic release date for The Last of Us 2 may be some time in 2020. There have been rumors that The Last of Us 2 will be a cross-generational game, releasing for both the PS4 and PS5. And if those rumors are to be believed, The Last of Us 2 may be a PS5 launch title, which would potentially put it out until November 2020.
Since Sony has yet to announce anything in regards to The Last of Us 2's release date, fans should take the release date leaked by ProGamingShop with a grain of salt. It's possible The Last of Us 2 will launch this September, but for now, it seems like the leaked release date is actually just a placeholder.
