The Last of Us Part 2 has been out for over a year, and there's some good news for gamers who haven't yet jumped into the widely acclaimed action-adventure game. On the PlayStation Store, the game has dropped in price by $20, and no end date on the discount means the price drop is likely permanent. Joel and Ellie's continued journey in the pandemic-stricken United States is still winning awards at ceremonies such as the 2021 G.A.N.G. Awards, and this latest price cut might just be the perfect opportunity for skeptics to give it a shot.

Not all AAA gaming experiences are as quick to be discounted as The Last of Us 2. Another highly-anticipated PlayStation exclusive, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake, is still sitting at $60 for the base PS4 version despite releasing in April of last year. Insomniac's Spider-Man: Miles Morales is only $10 off its original price, though it didn't release until November 2020. Even though it's on a completely different console, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still sitting at $60 on the Nintendo eShop despite coming out in 2018.

Gamers who feel like checking out The Last of Us 2 after this discount will also notice a discount on the game's Digital Deluxe Edition as well. With the Standard Edition now $40, the Digital Deluxe Edition has dropped to $50. This edition includes a PS4 theme, PlayStation Network avatars, a digital soundtrack, and a digital mini art book. So far this discount has only hit the United States PlayStation Store, with the UK store version still at its original price.

Although the price drop will likely be viewed favorably by gamers, some may see it as a marker of The Last of Us 2's dwindling sales after a record-breaking release week. With around 4 million copies sold in its first weekend, The Last of Us 2 smashed the 3.3 and 3.1 million opening weekend totals achieved by PS exclusives Marvel's Spider-Man and God of War respectively. However, its second week saw an 80% decrease in sales compared to a 42% and 35% decrease for the other two exclusives.

But even if The Last of Us 2 hasn't had the staying power of other PlayStation games, it has certainly done well enough for the franchise to stay alive and relevant. Fans are hoping the rumored faction multiplayer mode for The Last of Us 2 will be arriving this year, and this month kicked off the start of filming for The Last of Us HBO TV series. There's also hope that the game may follow in the footsteps of Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima with a Director's Cut version, which could add more content to the acclaimed game.

The Last of Us Part 2 is available on PlayStation 4.
