The Last of Us Part 2 is one of the biggest games of the year. Just like the original The Last of Us came out as perhaps the swan song title for the PS3 before the PS4 launched, The Last of Us Part 2 did the same for the PS4 earlier this year. But with the next generation of gaming kicking off this month with the PS5, The Last of Us Part 2 is already on outdated tech, but apparently not for long.

According to a retail listing on Best Buy, a next-gen upgrade for The Last of Us Part 2 is on the way. The Last of Us Part 2 is currently on sale as a part of Black Friday for various retailers for the PS4. Best Buy's listing spilled the beans about a possible PS5 version.

Bringing the game to the PS5 would make all the sense in the world. The original The Last of Us received a remastered version for the PS4 soon after the new console launched, with upgraded performance and visuals. Naughty Dog could easily follow the same path with The Last of Us Part 2, by releasing an upgraded version to take advantage of all of the technology the PS5 has to offer.

However, the listing could be referring to the small upgrades that the game sees while playing on the PS5 via backward compatibility. The Last of Us Part 2 uses haptic feedback on the PS5, for example. Small upgrades are certainly possible without completely releasing a different/new version of the game. However, the "includes next-gen upgrade" seems to indicate that a game will see a next-generation version.

As one of the year's most powerfully emotional games, The Last of Us Part 2 has been nominated for The Game Awards 2020 in multiple categories, including Game of the Year. It feels natural for the game to have some sort of remastered or fully upgraded version for the PlayStation 5 to completely take advantage of everything the brand new console has to offer, including Ray-Tracing, 4K resolution, better and more consistent frame rate, and more.

2020 has been a strong year for gaming, and a very varied year as well. 2020 saw an extremely popular relaxing and charming life simulator game (Animal Crossing: New Horizons), a hellish rogue-like action role playing game (Hades), and an emotional and heart-wrenching story-based adventure (The Last of Us Part 2) all receive Game of the Year nods. And with Cyberpunk 2077's delay, many think that The Last of Us Part 2 is a shoo-in the win The Game Awards 2020.

The Last of Us Part 2 is out now for PS4.
