The Last of Us 2 fans have gone through a roller coaster of emotions as of late. First The Last of Us 2 was hit with an indefinite delay, and then major plot points were leaked online, spoiling the story for many fans in the process. Then Sony announced a new June 19 release date for The Last of Us 2, and now a little bit more information on the upcoming game has been released to the public: its massive file size.
It's been confirmed through The Last of Us 2's product page on the official PlayStation website that the game will come in at a staggering 100GB. The Last of Us 2's 100GB file size means that the game will be coming on two discs for those picking up the physical version, making it easily one of the largest video games of the entire generation. Needless to say, there will likely be many PS4 owners who will need to make some room on their hard drives before they will be able to download the game.
Considering The Last of Us 2's graphics and scope, it's not surprising that the game's file size is so big. However, game file sizes are continuing to grow at a time when ISPs are continuing to implement strict data caps on their customers. This combined with the rise of game streaming seems like it will eventually force ISPs to change their practices, but so far they don't really appear to be budging.
At any rate, knowing The Last of Us 2 file size ahead of time lets players prepare by making the necessary space on their hard drives. Hopefully Naughty Dog and Sony allow for The Last of Us 2 to be pre-loaded ahead of time, though more information on that likely won't come until we get closer to The Last of Us 2's release date in June.
Despite The Last of Us 2 spoilers leaking online, there is still considerable hype for the game, especially since it's been a whopping seven years since the launch of the original. Whether or not it lives up to fans' lofty expectations remains to be seen, but luckily we won't have to wait too much longer to find out.
The Last of Us 2 launches on June 19, exclusively for the PS4.
